With catchy song titles like "Hey, Wanna Throw Up? Get Me Naked," "Monkey!!! Knife!!! Fight!!!," and "Lemurs, Man, Lemurs," it's hard not to be at least a little bit curious about this Seattle-based quintet. Featuring members of Botch, Kill Sadie, and Sharks Keep Moving, Minus the Bear emerged on Seattle's music scene in 2001 with the release of their six-song EP This Is What I Know About Being Gigantic. The band comprised guitarist Dave Knudson, vocalist/ guitarist Jake Snider, drummer Erin Tate, and bassist Cory Murchy. Though the band entere...[more]

MINUS THE BEAR has followed up last year's debut EP with a gem of a full-length album. After a year of building a loyal pack of fans in their hometown of Seattle, as well as winning the hearts of new faces while touring in support of their EP "This Is What I Know About Being Gigantic," the boys holed up in the studio this summer to record new music with Steve Fisk at the dials (Beat Happening, Pell Mell, Low, Three Mile Pilot). They came out of that studio looking and sounding good, carrying the new shit, t   [ read more ]

Three years removed from the riveting full-length debut, Highly Refined Pirates, this highly stylized Seattle indie-pop group flaunts substantial glitch-riddled prog-pop on their second Suicide Squeeze full-length. Weaving through territories long established by '70s prog-rockers (Yes, Rush), '80s proto punks (Fugazi), and '90s art rock mind-fucks (Jawbox, Joan Of Arc), Minus The Bear invoke the modern love affair between dance driven strategy and lush, Upper Pacific sweater rock. For the past six years, Seattle's Minus The Bear have orbited the music world like a distant meteor, fine-tuning their brand of idiosyncratic indie rock and discovering how technology can help enhance their unique pop vision - all of which is about to culminate with this, their latest full-length. Says bassist Cory Murchy, "I hate the term 'organic', but that's the one term I can think of when comparing this to our other records because there's a lot of weird electronic stuff going on there, but there's som   [ read more ]

Minus The Bear's records are frequently steeped in atmospherics and peppered with some serious prog-rock tendencies. Their most recent full-length, Menos El Oso, was heavy on samples and their live set finds guitarist David Knudson playing his pedals more frequently than his guitar, hunkered over the side of the stage, syncopated and spastic. As the band transforms, this record achieves that rare remix goal of presenting an already esteemed record in an entirely new light.[ read more ]

Members of Northwest all-stars KILL SADIE, BOTCH and SHARKS KEEP MOVING deliver five songs with their new collaborative project MINUS THE BEAR. The perfect mix of catchy melodies, angular textures placed just right and a hearty dose of spaced out atmosphere come together with stellar arrangements to raise the bar for debut EPs. This is essential rock and roll with a twist for the now and a focus on time-honored themes of drinking and girls that smoke. And check out those song titles!

Although Minus the Bear's uniformly goofy song titles and album names make the Seattle quartet seem at first like the spiritual descendents of local scene godfathers the Young Fresh Fellows -- besides the sarcastic album title, the best titles this time out have to be "Hey, Is That a Ninja Up There?" and "I'm Totally Not Down With Rob's Alien" -- the funniest thing about them is how straightforward and (relatively) serious their music is. Boasting a slightly rougher sound than the Steve Fisk-   [ read more ]
