Iron & Wine
Singer/songwriter Samuel Beam, who rose to prominence with a blend of whispered vocals and softly homespun indie folk, chose the moniker Iron & Wine after coming across a dietary supplement named "Beef Iron & Wine" while working on a film. Raised in South Carolina, Beam received his bachelors degree in art from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond and later his Master of Fine Arts degree from Florida State University Film School. Although Beam would later expand his sound to include electric instruments and rich, lush textures, he was firmly exploring the f...[more]

This album collects songs ranging from out-of-print to never-before-released and spans Iron And Wine's earliest sessions which yielded the band's debut (2002's The Creek Drank The Cradle) through material recorded for 2007's The Shepherd's Dog. The album is broken into two sections. The first is an assortment of hushed home recordings, unedited and raw, and the second highlights moments captured in the studio with the help of other musicians, friends, and engineers.

Iron And Wine's most ambitious and accomplished recording to date, and also the most satisfying. While many of us learned of Iron And Wine by way of the tender and spare rendering of The Postal Service's 'Such Great Heights' on the 'Garden State' soundtrack, those who dug deeper discovered a classic American tunesmith with a precocious musical signature. This whole album breathes. Its seductive rhythms percolate and undulate. The Shepherd's Dog is informed by a sensuality that brings a dreamscape to [ read more ]

Iron and Wine return with one of the most anticipated releases of 2004. 'Our Endless Numbered Days' is the second full-length album from Iron and Wine (essentially Sam Beam), and it was recorded both at Sam's Miami home and in Chicago's Engine Studios with Brian Deck (Red Red Meat, Modest Mouse, Ugly Casanova.). On it, Sam is aided and abetted by his regular touring and recording conspirators: his sister Sarah Beam, Patrick McKinney, Jeff McGriff, EJ Holowicki, and Jonathan Bradley. Listening to 'Our Endles [ read more ]

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Iron and Wine's debut record, 'The Creek Drank the Cradle,' is written, produced, and performed by Sam Beam and features only Beam's voice, a gently strummed acoustic guitar, some slide guitar, and the occasional banjo. Iron and Wine create intimate and emotional songs, recorded bedroom-style but never letting the lo-fi get in the way of the tune. The obvious comparison has to be Lou Barlow/Sebadoh/Sentridoh, as they share the same breathy voice, melancholy outlook on life, and devotion [ read more ]

Sam Beam returns with a follow-up EP to last year's acclaimed debut, 'The Creek Drank the Cradle.' The songs here were culled from that same batch of bedroom recordings. The EP also serves as a precursor to Iron and Wine's sophomore album, 'Our Endless Numbered Days.' As Entertainment Weekly said of Beam, 'Based in Miami, of all places, he launches balloons of sweetly whispered regret over trance-inducing backwoods string-band arrangements and watches them float away, his heart in tow. A-.'

#29 Seller of 2005! Sam Beam's third record is striking both for its broadened instrumental palette (percussion, piano, violin, electric guitar) and its thematic focus on female characters both archetypal and personal. He frames his melancholy in concrete imagery and solid, inviting melodies. Self-assured, spellbinding, and richly, refreshingly adult. Six new songs recorded with Brian Deck in Chicago.
