Built to Spill
Built to Spill were one of the most popular indie rock acts of the '90s, finding the middle ground between postmodern, Pavement-style pop and the loose, spacious jamming of Neil Young. From the outset, the band was a vehicle for singer/songwriter/guitarist Doug Martsch, who revived the concept of the indie guitar hero just as Dinosaur Jr.'s J Mascis -- another important influence -- was beginning to fade from the limelight. On record, Martsch the arranger crafted intricate, artfully knotted tangles of guitar; in concert, his rough-edged soloing heroics ...[more]

Order There Is No Enemy and receive a link to download the album track "Hindsight" immediately after check-out! VINYL FORMAT. Three and a half years in the making, the efforts of writing and recording There Is No Enemy led Built to Spill founder Doug Martsch to wonder whether this would be the last album he ever makes. For this release, song lyrics were labored over then thrown in the trash, guitar parts revised again (and again). A musician and artist like Doug Martsch edits [ read more ]

With There's Nothing Wrong With Love, Idaho native and former Treepeople singer-guitarist Doug Martsch brings the lush pop-rock of the Beatles and Beach Boys kicking and screaming into the Sonic Youth-era. Built To Spill marries the timeless and the modern so naturally that even brilliant, like-minded contemporaries like Guided By Voices and the Flaming Lips seem calculated. None of these songs crosses the dreaded four-minute mark. Maximum heavy-pop pleasure is squeezed into concise verse-chorus-vers [ read more ]

Insound Staff Pick - 2008! Perhaps realizing that their time on a major label was likely limited, Built to Spill made a gutsy choice for Keep It Like a Secret, their second album for Warner Brothers. They embraced the sounds of a big studio and focused their sound without sacrificing their fractured indie-rock aesthetic. In a sense, this is Built to Spill's pop album: every song is direct and clean, without the long, cerebral jamming that characterized their earlier albums. That's not to say that the [ read more ]

Released in 1997. Not many groups would take a major-label contract as a cue to release an album where the shortest song is a very radio-unfriendly five minutes in length. For that, listeners can thank their lucky stars that Built to Spill isn't like many groups -- and that frontman Doug Martsch isn't like many artists. Using Warner's bigger budgets and distribution, Martsch and company have made an album at once inspiring and quietly emotional. Their best album yet.

SOUND SAVER. This collection strings together Built to Spill's loose ends: outtakes from each of the band's first two albums, three independently released singles, and two tracks recorded for compilations. Given bandleader Doug Martsch's penchant for exquisite production and extensive arranging on his later albums, this mix-and-match release is certainly the least desirable full-length the band has released. The sound is sparse, and Martsch is still learning the intricacies of his craft. But the innocence i [ read more ]

Built to Spill/Caustic Resin sees the two title bands working together to perform four songs; the first two songs are penned by Built to Spill, the third is penned by Caustic Resin, and the final track is a cover of a Kicking Giant's "She's Real." "When Not Being Stupid Is Not Enough" is an incredible nine-minute ride, filled to the emotional breaking point with classic Doug Martsch guitar dynamics, his confident vocals, and angry lyrics. The song would seem completely at home on the ba [ read more ]

As definitive a concert document of the band as we're likely to get, and it's close to being essential listening even for fans that aren't keen on live albums. "Live"'s defining performance is a 20-minute cover of Neil Young's "Cortez the Killer," on which Doug Martsch's vocal and guitar work bear an amazingly accurate similarity to Young, almost to the point of flat-out imitation. Yet somehow, the performance doesn't feel derivative -- it seems more like Martsch is staking out long-coveted territory and on [ read more ]

What a mess -- from all the sloppy guitar ramblings to the constant rhythm changes assuming that the rest of the band was barely aware of Doug Martsch's tempo swings, Ultimate Alternative Wavers is all over the place. But somehow, Built to Spill bounce off each other by using this technique of improvising what direction the sound is going to next. And with this being their first record, it's almost as if they're taking a cue from the likes of early Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr. when it comes t [ read more ]

Built to Spill haven't released an album for five years, and the time off seems to have rejuvenated the band -- You in Reverse is full of fire and energy. The bandmembers play with a thrilling blend of abandon and sensitivity on this mix of accessible guitar rockers, twisting and turning guitar workouts, and somber balladry with enough intelligence and emotion to put groups half their age to shame (and by the looks of the gray in their beards, they are getting up there). Many of the songs on {^You in [ read more ]
