My Morning Jacket
Although they first emerged in 1998 as devotees of Neil Young's country-tinged classic rock, My Morning Jacket steadily widened their sound throughout the following decade, embracing everything from neo-psychedelia to Americana, funk, prog, and reggae. By the time Evil Urges arrived in mid-2008, they had successfully molded themselves into Kentucky's answer to Wilco, with unexpected detours and sonic experiments adding complexity to the band's alt-country roots.
My Morning Jacket's de facto leader is vocalist/guitarist Jim James (birth name: James Olliges),...[more]

#56 Seller of 2005! Z is a richly varied 10-song collection encompassing carefully wrought ballads like "Wordless Chorus" and "Knot Comes Loose," multi-genre jams such as "Off The Record," the silvery country-soul of "Lay Low," and high-energy rockers in the form of "Anytime" and "What A Wonderful Man." The album concludes majestically with "Dondante," a seven-minute opus that weaves together several threads of Louisville-fueled creativity and engagement. My Morning Jacket honed the material for its upcoming album, Evil Urges, during an extended stint in Colorado. Once the material was ready, MMJ hunkered down in Manhattan to record with co-producer Joe Chiccarelli. Like John Leckie, who produced the band's 2005 album, "Z," Chiccarelli proved a valuable sounding board. Keyboardist Bo Koster describes the Colorado songwriting process as "a good caring, loving place. We'd cook meals together, watch movies together, play music together and go [ read more ]

It's a beautiful thing to know that Brian Wilson is still alive and well in the kingdom of indie rock. My Morning Jacket's third full-length effort, and first for the ATO/RCA venture label, is a step beyond the band's work for Darla. While the gorgeous amalgam of the Band's vision of country/Americana and Neil Young's blend of folk and rock are everywhere present, there is a new textural awareness evident on It Still Moves. In 2004, a dreamy cover of "Rocket Man" concluded My Morning Jacket's first volume of rarities. Which was prescient, because it's Elton John that Jim James' songs for 2005's Z first bring to mind. From the wistful recollection of "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" to Honky Chateau's melodic and genre explorations, John's ability to mesh styles and take detours within his sturdy pop songwriting applies to James here, particularly in the expansive opener, "Wordless Chorus," or the in [ read more ]
