The Black Heart Procession
Formed in late 1997 in San Diego, the Black Heart Procession have been described as beautifully bleak and brooding indie rock with a dark side. Lyrically touching on the melancholy side of human nature, the five-piece band is appropriately named given its themes of isolation, depression, and heartache. The core members of Pall Jenkins and Tobias Nathaniel (Three Mile Pilot) also collaborate on-stage and in the studio with various musicians whose instruments include guitar, piano, percussion, and even saw. This uniqueness led to a 1998 record deal with {@Cargo Recor...[more]

A 15-song soundtrack to a noirish murder mystery that never was and never will be written. A true, defining masterwork complete with '50s-style female backing vocals, '70s synthesizers, and some full-on electric guitar work. This album is in many ways more accessible than previous BHP efforts, but it is still filled with despair, loss and love that could only have come from the mind of Pall Jenkins or some abandoned ghost town in some other universe. Everything you hoped it would be, but nothing like wha [ read more ]

With members of Clikatat Ikatowi and Three Mile Pilot in tow you'd think the musical landscape would be much more aggressive. However, The Black Heart Procession seems to have no interest in any of the obvious attention getting histrionics of San Diego's aggro-punk scene from which its members are born. The band uses subtlety and moodiness instead to relay its emotions. Even the use of percussion is scarce as only four songs have drums at all. Tobias Nathaniel fills the gaps left by the lack of a bottom end [ read more ]

The Spell is the most fitting name yet for a Black Heart Procession record. True, One and Two and Three have economy on their side, and Amore del Tropico nodded toward the intrigue within. But The Spell nails it. Spells are cast over a person, a love affair, a nation, a world; they enchant and entrap, disorient and delude. They are the heart of this record, both the webs they spin and the snap that occurs when they're broken. And there is no better word to describe [ read more ]

"In the Fishtank" is the ongoing project of Konkurrent, an indie music distributor in the Netherlands. They invite musicians to record whatever they like and give them two days of studio time and the freedom to do exactly that. On "In the Fishtank 11," Black Heart Procession and Dutch prog rockers Solbakken become sparring partners, ending up somewhere in the land of the Bad Seeds with a bag of Morricone leftovers tossed behind a bin of old new wave favorites. Features the fascinating voice of PALL JENKIN [ read more ]

The bandmembers' musical backgrounds gave no real indication what this first album would be like, and the result is quietly, affectingly fascinating. Pitched somewhere between the darker, quieter moments of European or European-based performers like Jacques Brel and Scott Walker and the haunting hush of more recent American acts like the For Carnation, 1 wraps itself in a lovely melancholia that avoids self-pity for deliberate reflection and consideration. Matters of the heart, as the band name indicates, a [ read more ]
