Insound Staff Pick - 2009! Glasgow's Camera Obscura create lilting, sophisticated melodies that draw similarities to the work of Belle & Sebastian, The Clientele, and Trembling Blue Stars, but are also rooted in the more classic sounds of Nick Drake, Donovan, and Petula Clark. This is their first domestic release. Songs drift and linger like clouds in a summer sky, with gentle hooks and breezy vocals that stick in your head like a pleasant memory.

"Lloyd, I'm Ready to be Heartbroken" is the first single from Camera Obscura's forthcoming full-length, Let's Get Out Of This Country. A three and a half minute pop masterpiece with a healthy nod to 60's girl groups complete with Spectorian "wall of sound" production. With two non-LP B-sides and the video for "I Love My Jean" (previously unreleased in North America), this is a must-have for fans awaiting new music from their Glaswegian heroes since January 2004.

If this review could be one word long, that word would be "enchanting." Camera Obscura has always been lovely but they've made the jump to truly enchanting with their third album, Let's Get Out of This Country. Stepping fully out of the shadow of their onetime patrons Belle & Sebastian, the group has composed and performed an album that is comparable to B&S' best and ranks with the best indie pop albums ever.
