Johnny Thunders
Following in the footsteps of his idol Keith Richards, Johnny Thunders (born John Anthony Genzale, Jr.) lived the ultimate rock & roll life, spending most of his days wasted and churning out tough, sloppy three-chord rock & roll. He made his greatest impact as a member of the New York Dolls, the proto-punk glam rockers of the early '70s. During the late '70s, he was a familiar figure on the New York punk scene, both with the Heartbreakers and as a solo artist. Thunders kept performing and recording until his death in 1991, turning out a series of ...[more]

Despite now being hailed as one of punk rock's most important and enduring statements, Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers' banshee wail of a debut, L.A.M.F., screamed in silence upon its 1977 release, doing a commercial nosedive worthy of an FAA investigation. Admittedly, the record didn't stand much of a chance in the soft rock quagmire of the late '70s, but its odds certainly weren't helped by abysmal distribution (the group's label, Track Records, went belly up soon after the record's rel [ read more ]

An 18-track collection taken from an April 4, 1987, Heartbreakers gig at the Roxy Theater in Los Angeles, In the Flesh captures Johnny and the boys, with special guest, ex-New York Dolls bassist Arthur Kane, on one of those "had to be there" nights that, sadly, didn't come around nearly enough in J.T.'s career. Unlike a lot of Thunders live recordings, this one is conspicuous by the absence of the side banter and stoned drivel that spiced up so many of his shows. Johnny comes acro [ read more ]

Although the title Endless Party may have summed up the life of Johnny Thunders, the subtitle Greatest Hits Live is a bit misleading. One might expect this to be a compilation of Johnny's best live performances of his best-known tunes. The fact is, this sounds like just another live set from Thunders and company. Since any given Thunders set is going to feature many of the same tunes, almost ANY live Johnny Thunders could be called Greatest Hits Live. The performances are decent, but the s [ read more ]

The title After the Dolls: 1977-1987 implies some grand overview of that time period, but the subtitle, "Track and Jungle Records Studio Sessions," really gets to the heart of the matter. Johnny Thunders didn't get into the studio as often as one might think, and recorded for one label after the other, so the options get pared down rather quickly. In fact, After the Dolls: 1977-1987 culls tracks from just three albums: L.A.M.F., Que Sera Sera, and Copycats. There are only three tracks from [ read more ]

There are few rock artists of any genuine significance whose catalogs are more of a mess than Johnny Thunders, and we pretty much have the artist himself to blame for that. While Thunders helped create two stone classic albums with the New York Dolls, once he struck out on his own, his seemed more interested in going for the fast buck than building a career (doubtless a product of his decades-long junk habit), and when you get past the Heartbreakers' L.A.M.F. and Thunders' So Alone, [ read more ]
