Tom Verlaine

Famed for his trailblazing work as the singer and guitarist for the seminal New York punk band Television, Tom Verlaine also carved out an acclaimed and eclectic solo career. Born Thomas Miller in Wilmington, DE, in 1949, Verlaine (who borrowed his name from the French symbolist poet) was trained as a classical pianist, but gravitated toward rock music after an encounter with the Rolling Stones' "19th Nervous Breakdown." In 1968, he and bassist Richard Meyers (later Richard Hell) moved to New York's Lower East Side, where they and drummer {$Billy ...[more]

Verlaine has truly shaped the sound of modern music, from his early days with the Neon Boys and Television, throughout his solo career, and most recently, as the guitarist in Patti Smith's band. Always ahead of the curve, Tom's influence is immeasurable throughout the rock world with bands as diverse as The Strokes and Dos. No one, however, has been able to replicate his sounds, from delicate lace-like details to soaring and singling lines. Around and Songs And Other Things are his first new    [ read more ]

Cover is easily Tom Verlaine's best platter since his first solo release. This album sports unusual, yet wonderfully effective and imaginative arrangements which are sparer, leaner, and more intricate than those on his earlier releases. Production values are top-shelf great. "Travelling" is a funk-flavored selection with dry screeching guitar sounds and some later slippery modulations. "Miss Emily" is a rollicking, jumpy number which (despite its quirky vocal and production touches) in places anticipa   [ read more ]

Tom Verlaine's second album (originally on the Warner Brothers label) as a solo artist after disbanding Television, is not groundbreaking or innovative as much as it is consistent. The post-punk early '80s spawned only a handful of bands that lasted more than a few years, but Verlaine in his time was one of the more distinctive voices that did not depend on hitmaking status. Verlaine, David Byrne with Talking Heads and Dave Thomas with Pere Ubu perfected the non-plussed, upper oct   [ read more ]

Reissue of Tom's only IRS album that broke a 3 year silence in 1987. A varied, poetic outing ranging from rockers to slow, epic numbers where his lyrical guitar work really shines

ESSENTIAL CLASSIC. First US reissue of the classic debut post-Television solo album from 1979, with new liner notes by Verlaine. Considered by some to be "one of best 'solo' records ever." Something about it just connects straight through to the center of the universe, and I've always considered it one of the most underrated "rock" albums of the millennium -- a record that has sounded good every year from '79 to '02. I can't explain why the tracks "Mr Bingo" and "Yonki Time" have to exist, but "The Grip of    [ read more ]

REISSUE. Tom Verlaine borrows his name from the 19th century French symbolist poet Paul Verlaine, and nowhere in his 20-year catalog does Tom's music more closely follow his namesake's poetic philosophy than on Warm And Cool. Unlike most of his work, this one is entirely instrumental, with guitars often filling the traditional role of a voice in the melody. Originally released in 1992 in the wake of a short-lived Television reunion and the rise of Nirvana into a musical environment that clearly favor   [ read more ]

Tom Verlaine's second solo album, Dreamtime, was easily the finest music he'd created since Television's Marquee Moon. It was so perfectly realized that one wondered what he could do to top it, and when 1982's Words From the Front was released, the obvious answer was that he hadn't; while it's hardly a bad album, the songs don't rank with Verlaine's best work, and though his guitar work is superb as always, he doesn't appear to be breaking much new ground, content for the most part to recy   [ read more ]
