Ellen Allien
Like a lot of dance music producers, Berlin's Ellen Allien has had her hands in just about every aspect of her field. Allien's immersion into dance music began during an extended stay in London, at the height of the acid house phenomenon. Shortly after returning home she got into DJing, and by 1993 she had spun at Fischlabor, Tresor, and a number of other significant clubs. Throughout the remainder of the '90s, she hosted programs on Berlin's Kiss FM, worked at the Delirium record shop, operated a label called Braincandy, and threw a number of parties called ...[more]

Bpitch's ever-respected ringleader follows up 2001's fabulous "Stadtkind" album and the recent Weiss mix with a fresh new nine-tracker, "Berlinette." Building on the ace "Erdbeermund" 12", the album is a much more focused effort than we've witnessed from her before. Dense structures, chunky glitchtronix, heavy beats (some of which are courtesy of beat-twister extraordinaire, Apparat), and devastating basslines and melodies all combine to form a unique collection of 21st century technopop. Recommended!

VINYL FORMAT. Ellen Allien now trips back into the massive center of the club. "Lover" whirs and twinkles amidst subtle synth elements and between the hiss of the fog machine and the whispering voice of the siren. However, there's also a tight bass line, grooving synths, and shakers that add a house-y lightness. "You Are" features a straight kickdrum paired with tribal elements and a forward-rolling synth. Friction enough to sand the last bit of craziness out of ravers' spinal cords.

Sool is the fourth full-length solo release (following Stadtkind, Berlinette and Thrills) by the inimitable queen, Ellen Allien. Welcome once again to the Allien world: this one is subtle, mysterious, and minimal. Created in the deepest and darkest of Berlin's winters, 2007-2008, Sool is intended to be a valve, a loophole, a respite from the crazy summers into the introspection and hibernation of winter. This could easily be Allien's most intimate album yet: the sounds of everyday life and snatches of whisp [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. BPitch presents the last single release off of Ellen Allien's album Sool. "Ondu" and "Caress" get the remix treatment by Chaim and Paul Ritch. "Ondu" has two faces: obliging and harmonious on one side, and ruggedly dusky on the other. Ritch chops it up, isolating each effect and making it sleazy, while keeping the spleeny, schizophrenic attitude of the original. Chaim's remix hits the sound carpet with a big beater, turning the hypnotic silence of "Caress" into a whorled disturbance.

Teaming up with Holger Zielske with whom she also produced Stadtkind and Berlinette, Thrills harkens back to the dark, dense warehouses of German clubs like Tresor and Detroit basement acid house blowouts. Debut album from 2001, repressed. Finally Ellen Allien is able to again present her debut album Stadtkind. Allien speakers in her own musical language: psychotic, romantic and electronic. The chopped up sounds ornamented with atmospheric lo-fi attacks will keep you down and lift you up. The album contains both straight club-stompers and distraught spoken word electro. The driving force is Ellen's vocals, which contain the whole musical spectrum of Sadtkind.

VINYL FORMAT. Allien leaves everything out on "Astral" and instead offers her own definition of minimal Elechtech. Here she pins down every centimeter of the dance floor -- she knows how every corner, every angle sounds around her. In the process, she moves onward conscientiously. She is fully realized, especially in regard to her surroundings from years past to those ahead. Ellen longed for space with beat frequency, and her attempt to breach the threshold of technoid elektro continues to expand the genre. [ read more ]
