Ellen Allien
Like a lot of dance music producers, Berlin's Ellen Allien has had her hands in just about every aspect of her field. Allien's immersion into dance music began during an extended stay in London, at the height of the acid house phenomenon. Shortly after returning home she got into DJing, and by 1993 she had spun at Fischlabor, Tresor, and a number of other significant clubs. Throughout the remainder of the '90s, she hosted programs on Berlin's Kiss FM, worked at the Delirium record shop, operated a label called Braincandy, and threw a number of parties called ...[more]

VINYL FORMAT. BPitch presents the last single release off of Ellen Allien's album Sool. "Ondu" and "Caress" get the remix treatment by Chaim and Paul Ritch. "Ondu" has two faces: obliging and harmonious on one side, and ruggedly dusky on the other. Ritch chops it up, isolating each effect and making it sleazy, while keeping the spleeny, schizophrenic attitude of the original. Chaim's remix hits the sound carpet with a big beater, turning the hypnotic silence of "Caress" into a whorled disturbance.

VINYL FORMAT. Ellen Allien now trips back into the massive center of the club. "Lover" whirs and twinkles amidst subtle synth elements and between the hiss of the fog machine and the whispering voice of the siren. However, there's also a tight bass line, grooving synths, and shakers that add a house-y lightness. "You Are" features a straight kickdrum paired with tribal elements and a forward-rolling synth. Friction enough to sand the last bit of craziness out of ravers' spinal cords.

VINYL FORMAT. After Ellen Allien's long-expected fourth solo album Sool, here is the first 12'', which presents two tracks off of the album in extended vinyl versions. "Sprung" is characterized best by a permanent moving back and forth. Smooth, precise loops and subliminal bass lines accent the mysterious effects. "Its" is driving and direct -- a rough and straight piece of music that evolves, goes forward, and absorbs the listener completely.

VINYL FORMAT. Sool is the fourth full-length solo release (following Stadtkind, Berlinette and Thrills) by the inimitable queen, Ellen Allien. Welcome once again to the Allien world: this one is subtle, mysterious, and minimal. Created in the deepest and darkest of Berlin's winters, 2007-2008, Sool is intended to be a valve, a loophole, a respite from the crazy summers into the introspection and hibernation of winter. This could easily be Allien's most intimate album yet: the sounds of everyday life [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. "Elphine" is a track off of Ellen Allien's highly-acclaimed Sool. Zander VT and Troy Pierce purify this track with a pair of special remixes. "Elphine" creeps into your subconscious and produces positive energy. For Zander VT's remix, the characteristic "Elphine" hook crosses the whole remix theme and pushes the audience straight onto the dancefloor. Troy Pierce's remix is unique, pushed by an impulsive bass line and newly-arranged vocals, taken from the original.

VINYL FORMAT. Bpitch's ever-respected ringleader follows up 2001's fabulous "Stadtkind" album and the recent Weiss mix with a fresh new nine-tracker, "Berlinette." Building on the ace "Erdbeermund" 12", the album is a much more focused effort than we've witnessed from her before. Dense structures, chunky glitchtronix, heavy beats (some of which are courtesy of beat-twister extraordinaire, Apparat), and devastating basslines and melodies all combine to form a unique collection of 21st century technopop. This is the eagerly-awaited fourth installment in BPitch Control's Boogy Bytes series, mixed by the label queen herself, Ellen Allien. Allien describes this mix as "emotional, noisy, trippy, weird and sexual," an apt characterization of her typology of sound that is perhaps more crooked, more abstract or technoid than others, but with a seamless queue of artists that you can't help but be excited about. As a DJ, she maintains that emotional and direct contact to the audience always comes first -- lik [ read more ]

"I wanted to do an analogue mix, by hand. I used my favourite records of last year and the newest ones. I like analogue! And I like to hear how one has to manipulate the mix until it's tight. I like the mix because to me it's the ideal club mix that I personally would like to hear in a club. It's also a nice memory for me - I can remember every record being played by myself in a club. And when I now listen to the mix I can recall all the great moments." - Ellen Allien[ read more ]
