Originally known as "the Whitey on the Moon UK", Department of Eagles blossomed from the recording project of two college roommates into purveyors of ambitious yet intimate music inspired by Van Dyke Parks and Paul McCartney. Fred Nicolaus and Daniel Rossen met in 2000, when they were assigned as each other's roommates during their freshman year at New York University. Department Of Eagles is Daniel Rossen (Grizzly Bear) and Fred Nicolaus. In Ear Park is a colorful and expansive album; an intimate collection of songs. Much of the material Daniel brought to this record draws on memories of his father who died in 2007, and to whom In Ear Park is dedicated. Many of Fred's contributions relate to similar themes of nostalgia and mortality, giving the album an elegiac feel at times.
