Current 93
With a glut of industrial-pop hybrids on the market in the 1980s and '90s, several bands stayed true to the experimental nature of early industrial music. The Psychic TV axis alone spawned many creative artists, including Current 93's David Tibet, who blends Gothic chanting and haunting atmospherics with industrial noisescapes courtesy of tape loops and synthesizers. Though Tibet doesn't quite have bandmates, he frequently works with a core of collaborators including ex-Psychic TV compatriot John Balance (more famous for his work with {$Peter Christo...[more]

REISSUE. Soft Black Stars, Current 93's most haunting, personal and enduring album, was originally released on Durtro in 1998. Elegant Gregorian chants and cut-and-paste environmental recordings provide a bed for the muddy, disturbing gothic folk on this collection of Tibet's early-'80s recordings. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide

As a point of interest, this album was referred to as Current 93's 'pop' record when it was released. A very silly, sinister, and twisted pop record, if you ask me (but compared to their early experimental releases, I suppose it was pretty poppy in comparison). Somewhat interesting to me is the fact that Tibet's lyrics and vocals don't appear much in this album; there are a lot of guest vocals, and many of the lyrics are taken from various literary sources. -softblackstars.org

Originally released in 1994, Current 93's masterpiece Of Ruine Or Some Blazing Starre followed the classic Thunder Perfect Mind album and marked another leap forward for the band. Michael Cashmore's gorgeously delicate guitar, augmented by drones, bells, and sound manipulations, help to make this one of C93's most musically hypnotic albums, with David Tibet's vocals and text adding a quietly controlled power and drama virtually unsurpassed in the Current 93 canon.
