The Hold Steady
Resisting the musical trends in New York City, vocalist/guitarist Craig Finn (ex-Lifter Puller) formed the Hold Steady after moving from Minneapolis in 2000. Wanting to capture the sound of bands such as the Replacements and the Grifters, he recruited guitarist Tad Kubler (also ex-Lifter Puller), drummer Judd Counsell, and bassist Galen Polivka. Recording mostly live, the band released its debut, Almost Killed Me, on Frenchkiss Records in March 2004. Dave Gardener (Rocket from the Crypt, Drive Like Jehu) and Dean Botulonis signed on to...[more]

A Positive Rage documents the indomitable live spirit of The Hold Steady. It's accompanying album captures the band in their element, live and rolling around amongst a roaring crowd. It's not all about the shows though, it's also a tale of a band abandoning their day jobs and hitting the open road, grappling with success, always on the brink of collapse and praying they make it home in one piece. This one's of interest to anyone in a band, or anyone who used to be, much like that probing s [ read more ]

"The '80s almost killed me," admits the Hold Steady's Craig Finn on "Positive Jam," one of ten rock & roll confessionals on the band's debut. That sets the tone for the rest of Almost Killed Me, as Finn reveals a lifestyle that included a "skater phase," a "raver phase," and a "razor blade phase." His lamentations are the appropriate voice for the band's debut, which sets out to recapture the glory of classic American rock and early indie rock. With rugged guitar riffs and solos and [ read more ]

Debut album from ex-Lifter Puller Craig Finn's new band, The Hold Steady. Here, Finn provides a stream-of-conscious vocal line -- always honest, always brutal -- over a ragged b, late of '70s rock. (Finn's delivery sounds a little like Lou Reed a la 'New York.') The Hold Steady dishes out straight up rock 'n' roll that is, dare we say, almost rousing. 'The Hold Steady is a bar band out to erase the memory of electroclash and wake up somnambulant hipsters dancing to minimal German DJ's wearing electrical ta [ read more ]

Boys and Girls in America (recorded in the Summer of 2006 with John Agnello - Sonic Youth, Alice Cooper, Dinosaur Jr., Bob Dylan, etc.) is a quintessential sonic mission statement of the band - it's a true blue classic rock n roll record in the making - delivered by one of the nation's classic bands in the making. Thematically, the album addresses the travels and travails of the relationships between the x & y's of our great nation. The complex Catholicism meets character driven narrative of Separ [ read more ]

"There are nights when I think Sal Paradise was right/'Boys and Girls in America have such a sad time together....'" These are the opening words to "Stuck Between Stations," the first cut from Boys and Girls in America, the Hold Steady's third full-length. Before these, however, are piano lines and glockenspiel sounds that could have come from Bruce Springsteen's Born to Run album and guitar lines that could have been spit out of an AC/DC song. Sal Paradise, Kerouac's big character, [ read more ]
