Caribou
Dan Snaith's early recordings as Manitoba underlined his status among the chattering electronic classes as one of the brightest talents to emerge during the early 2000s. Having already proved himself master of the sublime with his 2000 debut EP, People Eating Fruit, the Canadian's subsequent Paul's Birthday EP opened him out even further. After moving to London, he released an excellent second album (Up in Flames) in 2003 that saw him become a darling of critics. One year later, however, Snaith was forced to give up the name Manitoba after Dictators fro...[more]

VINYL FORMAT. At the conclusion of our last episode, you might recall that our show was called Manitoba. Alas, what was a lighthearted sitcom became a drama, and it was revealed that Dan Snaith was no longer Manitoba, but Caribou. All the while, our protagonist has been hard at work on an artistic response, which has turned out to be a doozy in the form of his third album. The Milk of Human Kindness. Building upon the artistic foundation of Up In Flames, Snaith has shed some of the kaleidoscop [ read more ]

Dan Snaith's 2001 debut, Start Breaking My Heart, was released under the name Manitoba (well before Snaith was forced to change the name of his project to Caribou when Handsome Dick Manitoba of the Dictators sued for the rights). No matter what name he goes by, however, Snaith's music is always dazzling, ranking among the most innovative and engaging post rock on the scene. Start Breaking My Heart sports Snaith's usual mixture of digital electronica clatterscapes, shoegaze-inspired guitar nois [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. Dan Snaith, under the guise of Caribou (formerly Manitoba), has been producing critically acclaimed albums for six years now, each an impressive development on the previous one. For his Merge debut, he marries the kaleidoscopic grandeur he's known for with pop melodies and harmonies crammed densely together. The album is so vividly three-dimensional, it's hard to believe it was performed and recorded entirely by Snaith at home, save for vocal and songwriting contributions by friend/tour mate J [ read more ]

Originally issued in 2003--before veteran punk rocker Handsome Dick Manitoba forced the Canadian electronica artist Dan Snaith (aka Caribou) to drop the Manitoba nom de plume--Up In Flames was lauded as one of the finest albums of the year by many critics. Stirring strains of pop and noise-rock into a My Bloody Valentine-like swirl, Snaith offers up one dreamy, disarming track after another, with sly melodies and potent beats fading in and out of the mix, as on the shimmering opener, "I've Lived on a [ read more ]

Melody Day is the first single and a glimpse into the vocally charged pop music coming soon on Caribou's brilliantly kaleidoscopic Andorra. With a Four Tet remix and a non-album track, this is a great precursor to what promises to be a fantastic album. Dan Snaith has been producing majestic music and electronic soundscapes (first under the guise Manitoba and now Caribou) for six years now.

Caribou's Start Breaking My Heart is closer to Elliott Smith than Coldcut, and about as stable as a bull in a china shop full of unheard copies of Kid A, but this is the sort of production that niftily stands for modern solo melancholiacs with more to offer than a co-option of Warp back catalogs and egregious MOR. Responsibility for Start goes to Toronto's Dan Snaith, a twenty-something musician whose work is both technical enough for scholastic jazz ears and organic enough for ac [ read more ]
