Hailing from London, Hot Chip entered the picture with the release of their 2000 debut, Mexico. The EP was released by Victory Garden Records, a label owned and operated by members of London's resident lo-fi psychedelic rock institution, Southall Riot. The Mexico EP was a hypnotic wash of subtle -- nearly subliminal -- pulse-like techno beats, acoustic guitars, and plinky pianos, but the vocals were the true star of the show (no small feat in a musical climate overrun with disaffected Lou Reed-esque mumblers and bland Eddie Vedder impersonators). The Warning is a statement of intent that will show people the true nature of Hot Chip, and allow the band to rightfully assume the position in the spotlight they deserve. The Warning follows on the heels of their debut album Coming on Strong and the heavily touted single "Over and Over", perhaps Hot Chip's most immediate and monstrous single to date, which delivered a sly dig to those who heard them as too 'chilled out' first time around. The Warning has a unique and infectious   [ read more ]

LIMITED IMPORT VERSION! At the tender age of 7, Alexis Taylor began listening to Prince and dancing on his bed to the sounds of Dirty Mind and The Black Album, a habit which has continued into adult life. Meanwhile, Joe Goddard began heavily grazing on hip-hop records in the early 1990s, a diet which consolidated into an unusually passionate relationship with records by the Souls of Mischief and Madlib. The duo collided during an impromptu wrestling match in the school playground, and the result was 'Hot Ch   [ read more ]

Inclusiveness and studio improvising were the key factors in making British electro-pop band Hot Chip's third studio record, Made in the Dark. Several tracks were done outside the confines of their home studios, which was a first. "We recorded six demos in January, and that was our first experience being in a studio other than a room or a basement," Taylor explains. "I remember a lot of discussion about improvising in the studio, and listening to bands like This Heat," he continues. "We w   [ read more ]

For Hot Chip's installment of the legendary DJ-Kicks series, the boys deliver an eclectic mix that features everything from German minimal techno to classic pop, hip-hop, grime and garage. This is a mix that covers an unbelievable broad range of styles and truly pulls it off. To top off the mix, they threw in a brand new, exclusive Hot Chip track entitled "Piano Song," which takes their sound to an entirely new level.

Despite their feverish schedule this year which took in numerous side projects, solo records, countless dancefloor-igniting remixes, production duties and of course relentless touring, that indefatigable, delightfully off-kilter four-headed electro pop colossus known as Hot Chip have somehow found the time to assemble a lovingly put together little present for their fans. And not only that, but they have managed to rope in the services of none other than the godfather of the experimental psych-prog world, R   [ read more ]

New single from Hot Chip! From the band: The artwork was illustrated by Bevis Martin and Charlie Youle, who also made the video (which is included on the CD format). There are numerous remixes on board, including a wonderful version by Dominik Eulberg of which we are very proud, a brilliant 'Dirty Pop' version of 'Wrestlers' by one of our favourite producers Sticky, and our own remix of 'Ready for the Floor'.

Before The Warning, Hot Chip was poppy, but not exactly pop; their songs had clever ideas, but were missing the pieces they needed to really make an impact. The Warning brought those pieces together with a satisfying click, making the band's music immediate as well as pleasingly off-kilter. Made in the Dark isn't quite as big a leap forward as The Warning was, but it doesn't need to be -- Hot Chip has already hit their stride, and now their pop machinery chugs along at full speed. {$Alexis   [ read more ]

Keeping their hot streak of spotting quality artists when they hear them, the good folks at DFA welcomed to their already diverse and talented roster Hot Chip. The "Over and Over" teaser single featured the band in rocking fashion, complete with DFA signature production and a chorus courtesy of Alexis Taylor that sounds hauntingly similar to something Paul McCartney would write had he been paying attention to the music of the youth in his own backyard. A definite departure and a step in th   [ read more ]
