Easily one of the busiest people in indie rock, vocalist/keyboardist Spencer Krug of the critically hailed Montreal band Wolf Parade (as well as part time Frog Eyes member) leads Sunset Rubdown, intended to be an additional outlet for Krug's songwriting and slightly more experimental than Wolf Parade. Krug released the first Sunset Rubdown album, Snake's Got a Leg, as a solo work in July 2005. It wasn't long until he assembled a full band featuring Jordan Robson Cramer, Mike Doerkson, and former Pony Up! member Camilla Wynne Ingr. Followi...[more]

On their new album, Shut Up I Am Dreaming, Sunset Rubdown has evolved into a full-fledged band effort, abandoning the idiosyncrasies of lo-fi solo work yet still eschewing the allure of a polished, glossy production. Along with his bandmates, Spencer Krug (of Wolf Parade) has transformed Sunset Rubdown into a force of nature and crafted an enormous record. Rough and expansive like a thunderstorm or the whole of a canyon, Shut Up I Am Dreaming rollicks and rages in broad, sweeping gestures and    [ read more ]

Their third full-length features twelve songs that bleed in and out of each other, mixing portents with theatrics, confusions with conversions. "Beyond writing catchy tunes and packing them with whispers, mallets, harpsichord, and patches of cheapskate drum machines, [Spencer Krug's] an intriguing presence. Instead of bubbling along at one level, he roller coasters and raves, mixing nonsense with sharp observations and sadness with puns" - Pitchfork.[ read more ]

Sunset Rubdown was once the moniker under which Spencer Krug released low fidelity solo recordings. The project has long since evolved into a full band, and Dragonslayer is the third full-length recorded by the whole group. Besides Krug, it features the three musicians who originally signed on: Jordan Robson-Cramer on drums, guitar and keys, Michael Doerksen on guitar and bass, and Camilla Wynne Ingr on keys, percussion and vocals. And now, for the first time, newest member Mark Nicol can be heard on   [ read more ]

This 5 song EP by Montreal's Sunset Rubdown is the lone work of Spencer Krug. A far cry from his earlier solo work, Krug has abandoned his lo-fi past for a rich and psychedelic sound that is entirely unique. Krug's Bowiesque vocals and creepy song writing truly shine on this recording. Spencer Krug is easily recognizable as one half vocals and keys for Wolf Parade as well as earlier work with Frog Eyes. Nicely packaged and specially priced too.

Based in Montreal PQ via Victoria BC, Sunset Rubdown is a one man show featuring Spencer Krug. It could be described as a side project since Spencer sings and plays keyboards in Sub Pop's Wolf Parade and also performed on Frog Eyes debut The Bloody Hand. More accurately it is a experimental creative outlet for this truly unique artist. Stylistically this record moves through varied territory making it hard to categorize. Perhaps a new genre for music made by Victorian's is necessary. Fans of Wolf Par   [ read more ]
