When Elvis Costello's first record was released in 1977, his bristling cynicism and anger linked him with the punk and new wave explosion. A cursory listen to My Aim Is True proves that the main connection that Costello had with the punks was his unbridled passion; he tore through rock's back pages taking whatever he wanted, as well as borrowing from country, Tin Pan Alley pop, reggae, and many other musical genres. Over his career, that musical eclecticism distinguished Costello's records as much as his fiercely literate lyrics. Because he suppor...[more]

Two years after his hugely successful Warner Brothers debut, Spike, Costello released Mighty Like a Rose, which echoed Spike in its diversity, yet it was a darker, more challenging record. A densely arranged masterpiece full of effects and layered guitar tracks. A must-own for any Costello fan!

Spike was one of Elvis Costello's most wonderfully diverse musical offerings ever...and that's saying a lot given the experimental approach toward music he regularly undertook. "Throughout his career Elvis Costello has always been prolific; thus it was surprising, even given the change in record labels for the US, when he took a whole 20 months between Blood and Chocolate and this follow-up. But the musical growth he exhibits makes the wait worthwhile. The musical settings range fr   [ read more ]

Elvis Costello's tenure with Warner Brother's records marks some of the most diverse musical offerings of his career, from the impossibly catchy "Veronica" (his biggest U.S. hit) to the dark and sober "So Like Candy." This collection compiles his mature songwriting and stellar recordings from his Warner Brothers era.

In the middle of 1978, it would be easy to understand why Nick Kent, noted music journalist for the NME, would come to anoint Elvis Costello with the dubious moniker Horn Rims From Hell. Having just completed a barnstorming first ever tour of the US of A, which included enduring a week long visit from none other than Geraldo Rivera (?!), Elvis was done with being polite. His timid by comparison 1977 debut MY AIM IS TRUE, would become a distant memory, replaced by the far less kind and gentle racket    [ read more ]

North, Elvis Costello's 20th album of new material, follows the deliberately classicist When I Was Cruel by a mere year, but it feels more the sequel to 1998's Burt Bacharach collaboration, Painted From Memory, or even 1993's roundly ignored classical pop experiment, The Juliet Letters. Costello has abandoned clanging guitars and drums of Cruel -- abandoned rock & roll, really -- to return to a set of classically influenced songs, all "composed, arranged and conducted" by the m   [ read more ]

Elvis Costello assembled this compilation himself. It is highly idiosyncratic, not the least of its peculiarities being that the CD and cassette versions differ considerably. Costello describes a vague concept in his notes, but the collection of songs (47 on the CDs, 51 on the cassettes) seems a jumble. At least he demonstrates that songs from different periods work well together. A large part of Costello's oeuvre, including some of his best work, is represented. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

Elvis Costello's collaboration with Burt Bacharach produced the exquisite Painted From Memory, an unabashedly classicist pop album that recalled Bacharach's heyday with Hal David. It was such an individual album, unlike anything in Costello's catalog, that it's a wonder that the same batch of songs could produce another album as equally compelling and unique, which is exactly what Bill Frisell's The Sweetest Punch is. Costello sent Frisell demos of every song on {^Painted From    [ read more ]
