Deerhunter

Deerhunter is an experimental noise rock band from Atlanta, fronted by the compellingly odd singer Bradford Cox. Cox's vocal style blends vocal experimentation along the lines of Meredith Monk or Yoko Ono with a more direct and punky howl inspired by the Fall's Mark E. Smith. Cox is also a striking on-stage presence: the exceedingly skinny 6'4" lead singer has Marfan syndrome, a genetic disorder of the connective tissue that gives him abnormally long and spindly limbs. (The late Joey Ramone was another well-known frontman with Marfan syndrome.) {$...[more]

Insound Staff Pick - 2008! Microcastle is the follow-up to 2006's Cryptograms and was recorded over the course of a week at Rare Book Studios in Brooklyn, New York with Nicolas Verhes. It was recorded as a four-piece consisting of Bradford Cox (you may recall his recent solo ventures as Atlas Sound), Lockett Pundt, Joshua Fauver and Moses Archuleta. Most tracks feature Bradford Cox on lead vocals except 'Agoraphobia' and 'Neither of Us, Uncertainly,' where guitarist Lockett Pundt is the main provider   [ read more ]

Cryptograms is the second full-length offering from Deerhunter The album took almost two years to finish and was the product of emotional, physical, and financial strain on the group. The result is an album that finds the band shifting from discordant catharsis, and forming a sonic identity that completely expresses the place from which they have arrived. The album functions in part as a study in duality and the concept of the same experiences seen from two angles, present and past.

'Originally released as a companion disc to go with Microcastle, Weird Era Cont. is an entirely new Deerhunter album in its own right, and there's a very compelling argument to be made that this is 2008's finest full-length by the band, trumping Microcastle in its experimental intensity and all-round sonic adventurousness. This is no collection of strange B-sides either: tracks like 'Operation' and 'Dot Gain' suggest that this band have a near inexhaustible supply of avant-pop firepower under their belt, lo   [ read more ]

This EP arrives on the heels of a well received sophomore full-length, Cryptograms. While exploring themes not especially dissimilar, the EP functions in many ways as an epilogue to both the full-length and the accompanying well-reported anxiety surrounding it's creation. The band now has a clean slate to explore something entirely new in the future.
