Wu-Tang Clan
Emerging in 1993, when Dr. Dre's G-funk had overtaken the hip-hop world, the Staten Island, NY-based Wu-Tang Clan proved to be the most revolutionary rap group of the mid-'90s -- and only partially because of their music. Instead of releasing one album after another, the Clan were designed to overtake the record industry in as profitable a fashion as possible -- the idea was to establish the Wu-Tang a...[more]

Since presentation is so important to the revolutionary rap group the Wu-Tang Clan, this 2009 compilation falls well outside the Wu universe on looks alone. That said, it is meant to fit the design standard of Sony's Playlist series and the track list is prime Wu material. The hits "C.R.E.A.M.," "Method Man," and "Protect Ya Neck" (in its "Jump Off" remix) are present and surrounded by fan favorites plus a couple deep album cuts. While the Wu-Tang Clan's fans are loyal, they do expect their underground heroes to be virtuous and are the first to point out unnecessary releases. They might want to let this one slip since the Legacy's label's 2008 release Wu: The Story of the Wu-Tang Clan is not only a fairly well chosen set but a soundtrack to the documentary of the same name, allowing viewers both a quick souvenir and primer before they explore further. Four mammoth classics kick off the release, sequenced in a brilliant way [ read more ]

Right in line with 2005 compilation Wu-Tang Meets Indie Culture -- and even sharing a couple of the same tracks -- 2008's Soundtracks from the Shaolin Temple is a sampler focusing on the Wu-Tang Clan and their ever-growing gang of affiliates. Here the multitude of solo efforts released between 2005 and 2008 are represented, along with the ever growing importance of affiliate producer/rapper Bronze Nazareth, who appears on multiple tracks. It's hardly a "soundtrack", and while hardcore fans of th [ read more ]

No doubt one of the most highly anticipated hip-hop releases of the year, 8 Diagrams is the latest effort from the Wu-Tang Clan. Pushed back several times, and surrounded by an incredible amount of hype, this album had a great potential to suck - particularly in light of the Wu's last couple of albums. Fortunately, however, 8 Diagrams packs enough heat to make it the best Wu album since their classic Wu-Tang Forever. RZA, the mastermind producer and MC behind the Wu-Tang sound, lays dow [ read more ]

With anticipation so high it caused debate not only among fans but among the group itself, Wu-Tang Clan's fifth studio record, 8 Diagrams, found itself at the center of attention as 2007 wound down.
