No Age
Los Angeles experimental lo-fi drum-and-guitar duo No Age are Dean Spunt and Randy Randall, ex-members of hardcore band Wives. Through assorted indie labels, No Age released limited runs of vinyl-only EPs before collecting many of those tracks for the singles collection Weirdo Rippers, issued by U.K. label FatCat in summer 2007. The record's cover pays respect to the Smell, a venue/art space they felt was partially responsible for the livelihood of both No Age and Wives. The Sub Pop debut by this LA duo is succinctly all encompassing, from the faux simplicity of the title to the beautiful distortion of its sound, to the packaging that includes a 68-page full-color book packed with photos and art pieces. The record opens with a symphony of noise and sometimes creeps, sometimes smashes through a sonic headlock befitting 'Daydream Nation'-era Sonic Youth, Kiwi pop, My Bloody Valentine, and experimental noise.

Formed from the ashes of the fondly-remembered Wives, No Age is Dean Spunt and Randy Randall, two young heavyweights from the LA skate/art/punk underworld. No Age purvey a stripped, essential, life-affirming, and skewed take on pop delivered via a clearly-defined punk-rock aesthetic; they take in noise, energy, and melody in equal measure. Variously reminiscent of Black Dice, The Ramones, and My Bloody Valentine, Weirdo Rippers documents a fast-developing band hitting their stride.

After a summer of MTV, huge festivals, and house parties, LA's shoegazing art punks return with the second single from the critically acclaimed Nouns LP. This is classic No Age - anthemic and chaotic, hooky and hazy, confusing and compelling. The second track is all new.

This LA guitar and drums duo have a reputation for exuberant displays of furious live energy. Their release of an early singles collection, 'Weirdo Rippers', found itself perched atop many a year-end 'best of' lists. This 7-inch is a compelling mιlange of punk abandon and lilting shoegazey distortion, and should whet the appetite for their proper debut release. The three b-sides are covers of Nerves ('Hangin' On The Telephone'), Nate Denver, and Urinals songs.
