A co-ed quintet from the outskirts of Bath, England, the Heavy draw influence from funk, soul, blaxploitation film soundtracks, and the gritty garage rock of the Sonics. Guitarist Dan Taylor and vocalist Kelvin Swaby became friends in the 1990s, bonding over a shared appreciation for vintage R&B and Jim Jarmusch films. Joined by bassist Spencer Page, drummer Chris Ellul, and keyboardist Hannah Collins, the two launched their own act -- the Heavy -- and began combining Taylor's distorted guitars with lo-fi samples, horns riffs, stomping percussion, an...[more]

VINYL FORMAT. The Heavy are back and this time it's in the form of their brilliant second album, The House That Dirt Built. Hitting like the garage-punk monster that is is, Shingae Shoniwa of The Noisettes offers up the backing box on a tune which sounds like Little Richard possessed by the devil and turned up to 11. Main single "How You Like Me Now"is pure vodoo-funk. "Sixteen" channels the ghost of Screamin' Jay into a tawdry tale of Satan and his young bride. VINYL FORMAT. The Heavy return with next single from their album, The House That Dirt Built, a widescreen funk epic, moving from JB's shuffle to crashing break, Animals guitar and horn fanfares, a huge build which is set to bring the house down wherever it's played. As if the original wasn't enough, The Heavy have compiled a superb package of remixes. VINYL FORMAT. The Heavy's dirty, guitar-scorched hip hop soul will lead you into temptation. Hailing from a town in the English countryside called Bath, which they describe as "the graveyard of all ambition," The Heavy make everything wrong sound right. Hailing from the poor, insular and dark countryside which surrounds Bath, the Heavy sound both possessed and insinuating, a kind of stealthy wickedness which overflows from their debut album, 'Great Vengeance & Furious Fire'.
