Formed in 1973, the British hard rock outfit Bad Company was a supergroup comprised of ex-King Crimson bassist Boz Burrell, former Mott the Hoople guitarist Mick Ralphs, and singer Paul Rodgers and drummer Simon Kirke, both previous members of Free. Powered by Rodgers' muscular vocals and Ralphs' blues-based guitar work, Bad Company was the first group signed to Led Zeppelin's Swan Song vanity label. Bad Company's eponymous 1974 debut was an international hit, topping the U.S. album charts and scoring with the number one single {&"C...[more]

10 From 6 means ten songs from six albums -- namely, Bad Company's first six records, all of which were big hits on album-oriented rock radio. This brief yet very effective collection gathers all of the group's best-known songs ("Can't Get Enough," "Feel Like Makin' Love," "Shooting Star," "Bad Company," "Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy," "Ready for Love") in one place. Although most album-oriented hard rock acts are better heard on the original albums, Bad Company's records tended to   [ read more ]

The string finally ran out for Bad Company with its fourth album. Their approach was so simple that it almost inevitably became formulaic, and although Mick Ralphs continued to screech with his sparse guitar leads and Paul Rodgers continued to present his lust in a soulful voice -- well, one had heard it all before several times by now, hadn't one? A band that begins life declaring "I can't get enough of your love" doesn't really have anywhere to go, and by this, its fourth album, Bad Company   [ read more ]

Although this change of musical scenery was a slight breath of fresh air, it wasn't enough to give Desolation Angels the much added depth or distinction which was intended, and only the vocal passion of "Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy" real   [ read more ]

Sanctuary's 2002 release In Concert: Merchants of Cool captures a latter-day lineup of Bad Company fronted by Paul Rodgers running through their big hits circa 2001 (the album is culled from dates at the Paramount Theatre in Denver and the Grove of Anaheim, but no specific dates are mentioned). The performances are sturdy, solid, and, at times, even a little spirited; though this couldn't be mistaken for the band at their peak in the mid-'70s, it will certainly entertain those who have stu   [ read more ]
