Luna
In the wake of the rather acrimonious breakup of his previous band, Galaxie 500, singer/guitarist Dean Wareham issued a 1991 solo EP, Anesthesia, and appeared on the brilliant Mercury Rev single "Car Wash Hair" before announcing the formation of a new band, dubbed Luna, in 1992. Originally named Luna 2, the trio was a kind of alternative pop supergroup that also included former Chills bassist Justin Harwood and ex-Feelies drummer Stanley Demeski.
After signing with Elektra, they debuted with the LP Lunapark, which earned comparison to {$Wa...[more]

Luna's second album drops the superfluous superscript (added to the band name on their first album for contractual reasons) and adds a second guitarist, Sean Eden. New producer Victor Van Vugt, who had previously done good work with Redd Kross and Kirsty MacColl, among others, strips away the reverb-happy haze that Fred Maher had coated 1992's Lunapark with, bringing Dean Wareham's vocals to the fore while (rather unfortunately) de-emphasizing Justin Harwood's bass and {$Stanley D [ read more ]

Penthouse isn't as entrancing as Bewitched, since Dean Wareham is suffering a slight songwriting slump, yet the group's lush, droning guitars remain enchanting, and they're effectively fleshed out by primitive keyboards and strings. None of the songs are that dissimilar from each other, yet the washes of airy melodies and guitars make Penthouse quite listenable. And the album does feature one terrific bonus track with "Bonnie and Clyde," a cover of a Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot [ read more ]

When they formed in 1992, Luna was a true alt-rock supergroup, boasting singer-guitarist-lyricist Dean Wareham from Galaxie 500, former Chills bassist Justin Harwood, and ex-Feelies drummer Stanley Demeski, among others. With a heavy dose of dream pop, strategic reverb, and smartly minimalist songcraft, the band's '92 Elektra debut Lunapark sparked major critical and fan acclaim, as did their 1994 masterpiece Bewitched - featuring legendary Velvet Underground guitarist Sterling Morrison on sev [ read more ]

No more "Luna 2" -- they settled the legal question, and are now a quartet with the addition of second guitarist Sean Eden. The first release as "Luna" is the opening track from Lunapark backed with five non-LP tracks: three interestingly chosen covers, one new original ("Rollercoaster"), and a stripped-down demo of the album's "Hey Sister." These last two recall the feel of leader/guitarist Dean Wareham's solo single for the Number 6 label, and indeed may date back from those sessio [ read more ]
