One of alternative rock's most promising -- and frustrating -- bands, the Breeders were conceived initially as a way for Pixies bassist Kim Deal and Throwing Muses guitarist Tanya Donelly to let out some suppressed creative energy and to take a break from being the second bananas in each of their main bands. Deal and Donelly both played guitar, leaving bass for Josephine Wiggs of Perfect Disaster. Taking their name from the group Deal led with her twin sister, Kelley, in their teens, the Breeders combined the spareness of Throwing Muses w...[more]

?There are only four songs on Safari, but the Breeders continue to improve, growing more muscular and melodic. All of the songs here, especially Do You Love Me Now? and a cover of the Who's So Sad About Us, rival the best on Pod.? ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

?Divine Hammer is probably the poppiest and sweetest number in the Breeders' catalogue, and the single does not disappoint. Hoverin' would eventually make it to Kim Deal's Amps project, but here it is a far more angry, unrehearsed anti-drug song (made more poignant by Kelley Deal's battles with heroin). The heartfelt rendition of Hank Williams, Sr.'s I Can't Help It showcases Kelley's beautiful voice, while J. Mascis's remix of Do You Love Me Now features his trademark whining in harmony with Kim Dea   [ read more ]

Following the departure of Tanya Donelly, the breakup of The Pixies, and the return of Kelley Deal to the fold, The Breeders' hit the alternative big time with their second (and last of the decade) record, and its hit singles 'Cannonball,' 'Divine Hammer,' and 'Saints.' The last Breeders album of the 1990s, as Kelley suffered and recovered from drug addiction and Kim found a new outlet in The Amps, Last Splash went platinum and brought the massive songwriting talents out from behind the shadow of Bl   [ read more ]

'Boasting some of the best B-sides in alternative rock, the Breeders do not disappoint on the first single off of the wonderful Last Splash. Cannonball is an absolute classic; a catchy stab at mainstream success that first put them on the map. Cro-Aloha is a rough, distorted take on the album's No Aloha that makes the song much less mannered than the original version. Their hilariously droll cover of Aerosmith's Lord of the Thighs stands as both a tribute and a parody, and 900 is bassist Josephine Wi   [ read more ]

Their first album since 2002's Title TK. By turns goofy, groovy, melancholy, strung-out, catchy, atmospheric, and at times, impossibly lovely, Mountain Battles underlines that Kim Deal is a songwriter and musician of rare intuition. Her songs move from offhand charm to emotional truth with casual grace, balancing scuffed-up noise against fraught silence; timeless structures against strange new shapes. And throughout is Kim's unique voice - languid, urgent, bruised, and beautiful. Mountain    [ read more ]
