Dinosaur Jr.
Dinosaur Jr. were largely responsible for returning lead guitar to indie rock and, along with their peers the Pixies, they injected late-'80s alternative rock with monumental levels of pure guitar noise. As the group's career progressed, it turned into a vehicle for J Mascis' songwriting and playing, which had the ultimate result of turning Dinosaur's albums into largely similar affairs. Over time, Mascis shed his hardcore punk roots and revealed himself to be a disciple of Neil Young, crafting simple songs that were delivered at a crushing volume and s...[more]

1987's You're Living All Over Me was a breakthrough record for Dinosaur Jr. and a seminal moment in alternative rock. Reigning in some of the noise from 1985's debut, Dinosaur, and featuring the first compositions by Lou Barlow, You're Living All Over Me became a blueprint for nineties guitar rockers and lo-fi DIY bedroom songsmiths alike. According to All Music Guide this is the record that " established guitar heroics as a part of indie rock, bringing the noise of Sonic Youth into mor [ read more ]

Picking up right where they left off, Beyond is the first time the original members of Dinosaur Jr. (J. Mascis, Lou Barlow, and Murph) have recorded together since 1989. Beyond is a monster of form. From the staggeringly paced guitar spew that opens "Almost Ready" to classic soft/throb dynamism of "What If I Knew," Beyond is an exquisite slab of pure Dinosaur Jr.

The conventional wisdom on Dinosaur Jr. is focused almost entirely on their sonics, which admittedly were devastating and influential. Other bands had never relinquished the force of electric guitars -- Hnsker Dn were a galvanizing force, Sonic Youth reaffirmed that sheer noise had poetic power -- but Dinosaur, through their laconic frontman, J Mascis, restored not just the idea of a guitar hero, but showed that underground rock could soar with the eloquence of a guitar hero, reeling from [ read more ]

Dinosaur Jr.'s third album, Bug, is considered by many to be their best. Leading off with J. Mascis' signature whine and more chiming guitars than evidenced on the previous two records, "Freak Scene" became an anthem for many alternative rock fans. Showing the melodic tendencies of contemporaries like Teenage Fanclub but continuing on the path of guitar heroics learned from influences like Neil Young and Sonic Youth, this 1998 gem is a must for all alternative guitar rock fans. Originally released in 1985 before the Jr. was added to the name, Dinosaur was the first shot across the bow from this legendary alternative rock pioneer. A noisy guitar driven affair, Dinosaur was a precursor to much of what would become popular "alternative" music in the 90's. With contemporaries like the Pixies, Dinosaur Jr. influenced a whole slew of guitar rock bands like Nirvana, Polvo, My Bloody Valentine and Swervedriver. This reissue features a bonus live track.

Fronted by singer-songwriter/guitarist J Mascis, Dinosaur Jr. formed in Massachusetts in 1984. Their emergence was a musical shot heard round the world as Mascis and company put the heroics of lead guitar back into the forefront of the indie rock realm-amazingly, it was a revolutionary idea at the time. Post-punk and pre-grunge, they were an intense force to be reckoned with, and when the band signed to Sire in '91, Mascis' shreddingly unique alt-rock sound was cranked up for vast new audiences of eardrums. Bouncing back from the staid Without a Sound, J Mascis turns in his most eclectic album since Green Mind with Dinosaur Jr.'s Hand It Over. Dinosaur's bedrock sound hasn't changed -- it's still a sprawling, electric mess of hard rock filtered through folk-rock song structures -- but Mascis plays with the arrangements, adding strings, trumpets, and on a handful of tracks, My Bloody Valentine's slippery guitar orchestrations and vocals (Kevin Shields and Bilinda Butcher both [ read more ]

J Mascis fired longtime drummer Murph before the recording of Without a Sound, which came as a surprise to Murph. Naturally, the change in personnel hasn't changed Dinosaur Jr.'s sound much; the only difference between Without a Sound and Where You Been is a more pronounced country leaning (particularly on the album's high point, the rollicking "I Don't Think So") and shorter, more concise performances. What hasn't changed are the overpowering fuzz tones of Mascis' guitar, whic [ read more ]
