Fleetwood Mac
While most bands undergo a number of changes over the course of their careers, few groups experienced such radical stylistic changes as Fleetwood Mac. Initially conceived as a hard-edged British blues combo in the late '60s, the band gradually evolved into a polished pop/rock act over the course of a decade. Throughout all of their incarnations, the only consistent members of Fleetwood Mac were drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie -- the rhythm section that provided the band with its name. Ironically, they had the least influence over the musical direct...[more]

VINYL FORMAT. "Sisters of the Moon" taken from the album Tusk; "Gold Dust Woman" and "The Chain" taken from the album Rumours. "Before Fleetwood Mac inadvertently admitted Ms. Stevie Nicks into their band as a required adjunct to her then partner Lindsey Buckingham joining, the already multi-platinum rock powerhouse had achieved nothing close to the inquisitive substance and analytical content that they would eventually typify in the subsequent years. Of course, Nicks turned out to be the unde [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. By 1970 Fleetwood Mac were immensely popular, touring constantly both at home and abroad. In February 1970 the band rocked Boston's legendary "Boston Tea Party" playing three amazing concerts there for three consecutive nights in a row. The performances were recorded in hopes of releasing a live album, but frontman Peter Green soon announced his decision to quit the band and the masters were promptly shelved. Some of the material eventually trickled out onto a few albums during the 1980s (Jump [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. Many people felt disappointed by Mr. Wonderful after the sublime first album. But in interviews Peter Green has stated the purpose of the album was to recreate the sound of a south side Chicago blues club. Raw and rough, the album does just that. Some fantastic guitar (surprised?), and some great off-color lyrics too. The horns are sloppy and perfect for the songs done on this album. What would 'Love That Burns' be without the subtle horns riffing away in the background? The same can be [ read more ]

There isn't anything wrong with this collection of early Peter Green/Jeremy Spencer era Fleetwood Mac recordings. There are 12 cuts that highlight the extreme blues and atmospheric power of that band in the early days. As promised in the title, this is a collection. The problem is, there isn't anything particularly right with this disc. It is absolutely a mystery why anyone with a remote interest in this band's origins would want yet another rehash of the biggies since there are approximately 50 ot [ read more ]

This double-CD set may well mislead listeners on two counts. On the one hand, there will be some neophyte listeners expecting to hear the silky pop/rock strains of the Lindsey Buckingham/Stevie Nicks-era Fleetwood Mac. This is, indeed, the original version of the band organized in 1967 by virtuoso blues guitarist/singer Peter Green, in which the latter shared the spotlight with fellow guitarist Jeremy Spencer, and they got no closer to pop/rock than renditions of Howlin' Wolf and {$B.B. This is yet another super-budget compilation of tracks by the original (aka Peter Green/Jeremy Spencer era) Fleetwood Mac. There is little to distinguish it from the other faceless dozens unless you count that several of these cuts are from the live at the BBC sessions, such as "Albatross" (the studio version's better), "Looking for Somebody," and "Man of the World." You already know what's on the rest: "Green Manalishi," "Black Magic Woman," Duster Bennett's {&"Jumping at Shad [ read more ]

Madison Blues is, for a change, a different kind of Fleetwood Mac compilation. Most are rehashes of the fabled group's years with the elusive guitar genius Peter Green, and his equally iconoclastic partner on the electric six-string, Jeremy Spencer. Green is only present on a couple of tracks here, the rest of this Recall two-disc comp is made up of the band fronted by Christine Perfect (nTe McVie) (most of the time) with Spencer and Danny Kirwan also taking turns in the vocal [ read more ]

Fleetwood Mac's debut LP was a highlight of the late-'60s British blues boom. Peter Green's always-inspired playing, the capable (if erratic) songwriting, and the general panache of the band as a whole placed them leagues above the overcrowded field. Elmore James is a big influence on Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, particularly on the tunes fronted by Jeremy Spencer ("Shake Your Moneymaker," "Got to Move"). Spencer's bluster, however, was outshone by the budding singing and songwrit [ read more ]
