Bob Mould
Guitarist/singer/songwriter Bob Mould was initially a member of Hnsker Dn, one of the most influential American bands of the '80s. Hnsker Dn was a post-hardcore punk band that helped define the sound and ideals of alternative rock. After Hnsker Dn broke up, Mould signed a solo contract with Virgin Records in 1988. The following year, he released his first solo album, Workbook, which represented a major shift in sonic direction. Workbook was an introspective collection, featuring keyboards, acoustic guitars, and even strings. The album received exc...[more]

Arriving after years of sonic bombast in Hnsker Dn, the reflective, acoustic nature of Bob Mould's first solo album, Workbook, was a bold statement of renewal. Like all of Mould's work, it's an intensely introspective record, finding him purging demons left over from the dissolution of Hnsker Dn. Instead of relying on raging guitars, Mould explores a wide variety of styles, from pure pop ("See a Little Light") to reflective folk laced with cellos. It's an astonishing array of styl [ read more ]

Bob Mould returns to his signature guitar sound and songwriting style with Body of Song, his first release on Yep Roc Records. Mould's sound inspired a generation of post-hardcore punk rockers who helped create and define the alternative rock movement. Written and recorded mostly over the course of the past year, Body Of Song is Mould's first new album-length release since 2002, and his first since the mid-90s to employ a guitar-heavy full-band approach ('Paralyzed,' 'Circles'). Guest musician [ read more ]

Guitarist/singer/songwriter Mould returns to form as a solo artist on his Anti debut. "District Line" combines the fire of his earliest work in Husker Du, the accessibility of his alternative rock, genre-defining trio Sugar, and the introspection found in his solo releases. He describes it as "stories of my simple life in a complicated town", that being his adopted city of Washington, DC. Working with Fugazi drummer Brendan Canty, Mould has returned to the live band sound of Husker Du and Sugar to kick out [ read more ]

Bob Mould is one of the most influential musicians of the alternative rock era, first for his early work with post-punks Husker Du, followed by the college-rock-defining pop of Sugar, and finally for his solo albums, notably his first, Workbook, which quieted Mould's previous ire to reveal his fine songwriting in a new light and allowed an introspective glimpse into the inner workings of an evolving artist. With Life And Times, Mould comes full circle, reclaiming his indie songwriting mantle f [ read more ]

A scalding, monolithic collection of soul-baring lyrics and primal guitars, Black Sheets of Rain is extremely powerful musically, but is also slightly monotonous. Nevertheless, the record features several inspired songs from Mould, including the catchy single "It's Too Late." ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

As he was promoting the last Sugar album, File Under: Easy Listening, Bob Mould hinted that he was tired of working with a band and was fascinated by the simple, four-track recordings of Sebadoh and Guided by Voices. So, it didn't come as a complete surprise when he disbanded Sugar a year after the release of FU:EL and began working on a record by himself. Bob Mould, his third solo album, was recorded entirely by Mould, but it doesn't sound like a lo-fi project -- it doesn't have [ read more ]

Just before The Last Dog and Pony Show hit the streets, Bob Mould announced that his supporting tour would be the last time he hit the road with a full electric band. From this point on, he would be challenging himself, finding different musical avenues to explore and leaving his trademark tower of guitars behind. Presumably, this also meant that The Last Dog and Pony Show would be the recorded farewell to this sound, and it is indeed an excellent consolidation of all of his musical quirks and sign [ read more ]

Based on its title, it's tempting to think of Life and Times as an autobiography, especially when armed with the knowledge that Bob Mould recorded this album while writing his actual autobiography (scheduled to hit stores in 2010). It's tempting, but not quite accurate, as this is less an orderly journey through the past than memories refracted through the prism of the present. Life and Times bears the unmistakable stamp of being latter-day Mould in how he consolidates his strengths, not embraci [ read more ]

In 1998, after the release of his album The Last Dog and Pony Show, Bob Mould announced he was hanging up his electric guitar and exploring other musical avenues outside of rock & roll. More than a few fans expressed some trepidation about Mould's career choice, and that buzz became a roar after Mould released Modulate in 2002, which found him diving head first into electronic music. At least in America, the vast majority of rock fans have not been able to come to terms with the rise [ read more ]
