Michael Schenker
Along with Gary Moore, Michael Schenker never quite reached the same level of acclaim stateside as he did in Europe (and other parts of the world), despite possessing exceptional, and quite influential, six-string skills. Born on January 10, 1955, in Savstedt, Germany, it was Schenker's older brother, Rudolf, who sparked the youngster's interest in guitar at an early age. Entirely self-taught, Michael picked up a thing or two from such hard-rocking acts as Wishbone Ash and Mountain, as well as his older brother, who would offer the youngster money if he would...[more]

This compilation pairs Michael Schenker's lackluster third album, Assault Attack -- his only collaboration with former Rainbow frontman Graham Bonnett -- with an even less inspired live album, Rock Will Never Die. Convenient yes, but still mostly unnecessary. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, All Music Guide

The question on the minds of most Michael Schenker fans is usually this -- when will he ever finally get his due? Apparently, the German axeman is practically the Rodney Dangerfield of metal. He's somehow managed to anchor two of the most important bands in the lineage of the genre and influence everyone from Metallica to Powerman 5000, and yet, while he continues have a rabid fan base writhing away in the shadows and is still widely recognized in countries like Japan where technical p [ read more ]

For a bandleader whose ego often dominated both his recordings and public reception, a series of entirely solo discs makes perfect sense. Former Scorpions and UFO guitarist Michael Schenker turns in his second Thank You disc in two years featuring -- as usual -- a handful of completely solo compositions. The 11 tracks feature a veritable army of Schenker's picking, bending, and wanking their way through neo-classical original compositions. The playing, of course, is impeccable, but mostly [ read more ]

While a very different supporting cast joins Michael Schenker on Unforgiven, this 1999 collection of hard-rocking numbers and swirling guitar solos echoes the return to classic M.S.G. form first accomplished on 1996's Written in the Sand. As the guitarist proved decades ago, there's no mystical chemistry, no mysteriously unifying combination of talents necessary for Schenker to kick out the old-school heavy metal jams with verve and style. Great songwriting? Well, that's another story, but [ read more ]

The Unforgiven World Tour: Live is a double-disc set recorded over a series of 1999 concerts by Michael Schenker and his backing unit, MSG (back to the Michael Schenker Group after a stint as McAuley Schenker Group). The material dates from throughout Schenker's career, including selections by the Scorpions, UFO, McAuley Schenker Group, and his own solo work. Although some of his best-known songs aren't here, the set actually functions pretty well as an overview of his entire care [ read more ]

UFO guitarist extraordinaire Michael Schenker is back with his first all-instrumental effort. He teased listeners in his early UFO days with instrumentals like "Lipstick Traces" and "Arbory Hill." Now Schenker fans get a full platter. Gone are the trademark Schenker rapid fire chops, but the melodic chord structures are still intact. Backed by the legendary Aynsley Dunbar (ex-Journey member) on drums and Jaohn Onder on bass, Schenker has a very solid rhythm section to work w [ read more ]

A follow-up to his first electric instrumental foray ("Adventures of the Imagination"), this 2001 Shrapnel release reveals a slightly heavier side of Schenker that shred fans should appreciate. Joined by Cosmo Squad rhythm section Shane Gaalaas and Barry Sparks, the talented Mr. Schenker is never forced to slow down on MS 2000: Dreams and Expressions while his musical cohorts catch up. There are no track names (just 20 numbers that correlate to the amount of letters in the record's t [ read more ]

Although he apparently shot himself in the foot several times throughout his career, guitarist Michael Schenker always seems to manage to land back on his feet. And the latest "personal victory" came in the form of 2003's Arachnophobiac. After exiting UFO after a several album-long "reunions," rumors spread about Schenker's health and well-being. But the longtime guitar hero silenced his doubters with an extensive tour, as well as an all-new solo release. Schenker has hooked up once more with [ read more ]

The first of many instrumental and alternately arranged forays into more dynamic musical realms, Thank You is Teutonic shredhead Michael Schenker's acoustic side trip into the warm and fuzzy soft rock landscape. During the harmonic high notes ("Courage and Confidence," "Love and Kindness"), Schenker does his best to squeeze out some rapid solos and generally treats his acoustic guitar as if it were anything but. The overdubbed picking exercises on "Endless Possibilities" take the tenden [ read more ]

This spirited, crunchy guitar-driven party is certainly wild enough, but there's a very dated corporate rock feeling, as if guitarist Schenker and vocalist Chris Logan swiped a few outtakes from some old Journey or Bad English sessions. Appealing, sure, but hardly something new. Neal Schon would have a great time listening to the blistering solos on tracks like "Because I Can." One unique twist is that most rock outfits with this kind of intensity don't incorporate the spiritual valu [ read more ]
