Emerging in the wake of the Smiths' demise as the U.K.'s most successful indie pop band during the late '80s, the Wedding Present were founded in Leeds, England, in 1985. Formed from the ashes of the short-lived Lost Pandas, the Weddoes (as they were affectionately dubbed by fans) were essentially the vehicle of singer/songwriter David Gedge, the only constant member throughout the group's tumultuous history. Initially rounded out by guitarist Peter Solowka, bassist Keith Gregory, and drummer Shaun Charman, the fledgling band quickly won a loyal foll...[more]

The band returned from an eight-year hiatus in early 2005 with the release of Take Fountain. This long-awaited album brought them back into the spotlight with all the style and sophistication associated with a legendary group, but fans were also pleased to see the band had lost none of the growling angst with which they had burst onto the scene with their 1985 debut. That intensity has been turned up even further for the new album, El Rey, The Wedding Present's first collaboration with the leg   [ read more ]

Thanks for the reminder! David Gedge and his two bands (the other: Cinerama, 1997-2004) have done such yeoman mid-tempo work for 17 years, since Seamonsters, that it's easy to forget that Leeds' Wedding Present began as the fastest jangle pop band in history (still never equaled in speed!). This first-official live LP is two complete 1987 soundboard gigs from England and Germany, originally given away with their fan magazine, Invasion of the Wedding Present. As such, both capture them at the height of their   [ read more ]

If you've waited for the inevitable all-encompassing box, opting to avoid the various forms of compilations tracking the Wedding Present's BBC sessions for the late, great John Peel -- or if you ever had a low-level panic attack wondering if there might've been an elusive 1991 volume between John Peel Sessions 1987-1990 and John Peel Sessions 1992-1995 -- you are now in luck (and indeed certain that there were no 1991 sessions). Containing six CDs in slimline cases and a thick booklet of text   [ read more ]

The Wedding Present was, and is, one of the most influential and successful indie bands in Britain. Active from 1986 to 1996, the band, fronted by songwriter and only constant member David Gedge, had seventeen Top 40 UK hit singles, patronage by the late renowned DJ John Peel, and acclaimed albums released on RCA/BMG, Island, and Cooking Vinyl. Among other notable achievements, the band had twelve chart singles - one each month -- in 1992, equaling Elvis' 35-year-old British record for "most hits in one yea   [ read more ]

It was a stunt of sorts, yet it was also an idea, and as the Legend! points out in the liner notes to this 2003 reissue, ideas in music are few and far between. It suckered weak-willed casual fans into apprehensively buying a Wedding Present single once a month for an entire year, but it also produced a handful of the group's best singles -- all 12 of which reached the Top 40 of the U.K. chart -- and several covers that were either completely unlikely or just the opposite. While the Hit Parade 1 CD   [ read more ]

Steve Albini's production gives Seamonsters a noisy, discordant feel in some spots, but David Gedge's suberb songwriting lies just under the surface. He manipulates his limited vocal range into a rich, wistful voice just about to crack. The Wedding Present work best on this album when Gedge's plaintive love songs explode into a distorted fury, as on "Dalliance," and "Suck." Two years on from their debut album, the Wedding Present delivered a proper sophomore effort, Bizarro [Camden Deluxe Bonus Tracks]; one quite distanced from the jangle punk days of 1987's George Best. Though David Gedge's obsession with the lovelorn had by no means disappeared, the band finally found a way to frame his lyrics properly, resulting in a darker album with more emotional weight where needed. "Brassneck," the Wedding Present' first collaboration with engineer Steve Albini,   [ read more ]
