Johnny Thunders
Following in the footsteps of his idol Keith Richards, Johnny Thunders (born John Anthony Genzale, Jr.) lived the ultimate rock & roll life, spending most of his days wasted and churning out tough, sloppy three-chord rock & roll. He made his greatest impact as a member of the New York Dolls, the proto-punk glam rockers of the early '70s. During the late '70s, he was a familiar figure on the New York punk scene, both with the Heartbreakers and as a solo artist. Thunders kept performing and recording until his death in 1991, turning out a series of ...[more]

Johnny Thunders spent the lion's share of his solo career trying to recapture the sloppy but inspired snazz of his glory days with the New York Dolls, and once you get past So Alone and the Heartbreakers' L.A.M.F., he usually fell far short of the mark. But Copy Cats, an album he cut with Noo Yawk chanteuse Patti Palladin in 1988, was a rare exception, a set where he stretched his boundaries a bit and came up with something memorable. Copy Cats is a set of rock & roll oldies, dati [ read more ]

The title After the Dolls: 1977-1987 implies some grand overview of that time period, but the subtitle, "Track and Jungle Records Studio Sessions," really gets to the heart of the matter. Johnny Thunders didn't get into the studio as often as one might think, and recorded for one label after the other, so the options get pared down rather quickly. In fact, After the Dolls: 1977-1987 culls tracks from just three albums: L.A.M.F., Que Sera Sera, and Copycats. There are only three tracks from [ read more ]

There are few rock artists of any genuine significance whose catalogs are more of a mess than Johnny Thunders, and we pretty much have the artist himself to blame for that. While Thunders helped create two stone classic albums with the New York Dolls, once he struck out on his own, his seemed more interested in going for the fast buck than building a career (doubtless a product of his decades-long junk habit), and when you get past the Heartbreakers' L.A.M.F. and Thunders' So Alone, [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. When former New York Dolls/Heartbreaker John Anthony Genzale died in 1991, he'd experienced just about all the ups and downs rock 'n' roll could possibly lay on one man. By the end of his solo career, abruptly shut down by heroin abuse, he had played an impressive number of live shows. This 1990 unplugged concert closed that circle and showed the many sides of a gifted guitarist and punk rock legend.

Supergroups are usually synonymous with prog rockers, not punk rockers. But in 1979, ex-New York Dolls guitarist Johnny Thunders and ex-MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer decided to unite (with Kramer fresh out of jail), as they began gigging under the name Gang War. Although the group never issued a proper studio album (drug use and mismanagement prevented it), several live Gang War sets have seen the light of day over the years -- one of the better being 2004's Gang War. Instead of working up a [ read more ]

Given the variable quality of the Johnny Thunders catalog, one should approach any new release or compilation with caution, and Anthology is no different. Yes, most of the tunes one would identify with Thunders are included, but aside from the L.A.M.F. tracks and a handful of others, these are not the best-known versions of these songs. In fact, not a single track from So Alone is included, probably due to licensing issues. So this ends up being a hodge-podge of mostly live tracks, presumably [ read more ]

The Doris Day song? Yes. Done by Johnny in his own weird way. This didn't appear on the Thunders album 'Que Sera Sera' but the 'B' side tracks 'Short Lives' and 'I Only Wrote This Song For You' do come from there. The cover photos come from the Nina Antonia book 'In Cold Blood'. They show a very young Johnny as a choir boy next to an older Johnny being held in jail.
