For over ten years, Ted Leo has been one of the most progressive forces in East Coast independent music, with a unique combination of punk and folk, soul and hardcore, and tradition and experimentation. Originally rising to a small degree of fame in the late-'80s New York hardcore scene by playing with Citizen's Arrest and Animal Crackers, Leo left New York for Washington, D.C., in 1990, when he founded and fronted Chisel, one of the first mod/punk revival outfits to gain national notoriety. For their fifth full-length release, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists met up with Brendan Canty (Fugazi) to iron out a new set of anthems that arrive with a confident and outspoken immediacy. With Living with the Living, Ted and Co. wipe clean the slate that once held names like Weller, Strummer and Bragg and indulge some of their farthest-reaching musical ambitions. Along with the punk sound and energy found in Ted Leo and the Pharmacists' previous works, Living with the Living finds soul, funk and   [ read more ]

Since his days in the early '90s leading the DC modsters, Chisel, Teddy has been creating some of the most innovative pop music in the underground rock scene. With this recording, Ted has returned to the helm of a rock band, leading James Canty (Make-Up), Jody Buonanno (Secret Stars), and Amy Farina (Warmers), and his voice is strong, his passion unnerving, and his energy is indomitable. All five songs on 'Treble In Trouble' heave with emotion and ardor as The Pharmacists breath life into four Leo originals   [ read more ]

You might remember Ted Leo from his exploits many years back in the New York hardcore scene with bands like Citizens Arrest and Animal Crackers. More likely, you remember his inspiring role as songwriter and leader of the legendary DC mod-punk band, Chisel. You may even be lucky enough to have caught the short-lived but long remembered Sin Eaters, whom Ted fronted from 1997-1998, or his touring stint with the Spinanes during those same years. Having labored for years in the mod pop outfit Chisel, he released his first solo effort in 1999 which fused his influences from such artists as The Jam, Elvis Costello and Squeeze with his love of reggae and dub music. The Tyranny Of Distance takes this one step further and is a brilliant showcase of Ted's incredible vocal and guitar playing talent and amazing song writing skills. Produced by Brendan Canty (drummer of Fugazi, producer of The Make-Up and   [ read more ]

Teddy finally returns with the follow-up to 2000's The Tyranny Of Distance with Hearts Of Oak and he's brought his incredible band, The Pharmacists, with him. Produced by Nicolas Vernhes and Ted Leo himself, Hearts Of Oak takes off where Tyranny left of, with passionate moments and moods inspired by Generation X, Dexy's Midnight Runners, and The Ruts. The album references the intensity and politics of late '80s DC hardcore scene, as well as the political dance pop of Chumbawumba.   [ read more ]
