Radar Bros.
The L.A.-based Radar Bros. -- originally comprised of guitarist Jim Putnam (Medicine, Maids of Gravity), bassist Senon Williams (Dengue Fever), and drummer Steve Goodfriend -- debuted with a self-titled EP (Fingerpaint Records) and quickly garnered themselves a following in the U.K. By 1996, the band had signed to Restless Records and issued a self-titled LP that combined sonic guitarscapes and smoky melodies, earning Radar Bros. a slowcore/sadcore tag and aligning them with peers Acetone and Low (while evoking memories of Neil Young, {$Bria...[more]

On the Radar Brothers' third release, And the Surrounding Mountains, the Los Angeles trio -- Jim Putnam (vocals/guitar), Steve Goodfriend (drums), Senon Gaius Williams (bass) -- retains the guitar strummed, slow dirges that earned the band a slo-core tag. But And the Surrounding Mountains is a stunning collection of songs that build on that slo-core reputation literally. Keyboards, electric guitar and vocals are layered throughout as each song escalates to a peak and a final denoument.

The Radar Bros.' second album The Singing Hatchet delivers more of their quietly quixotic, psychedelically rootsy songs, which roll along like tumbleweeds: shambling and seemingly fragile, yet surprisingly strong. This LA trio returns with their fourth full-length and first since 2002's And The Surrounding Mountains. For the past ten years, The Radar Bros. have delivered beautifully crafted sparse desert pop calling to mind influences as varied as Pink Floyd, The Byrds, and The Beach Boys. The Fallen Leaf Pages is thirteen songs of gorgeously lush, vaguely melancholic "slowcore". With bassist Senon Williams and drummer Steve Goodfriend, Putnam's compositions have grown into organic living entities on wh [ read more ]

Their fifth full-length is filled with beautifully layered melodies of wistful ease and delicate longing. They've expanded the range and texture of the trademarked Radar Bros. sun-baked and dreamy California psychedelic soul. This is the perfect record for a long drive on a tree-lined two-lane country road.

With touring guitarist Jeff Palmer a permanent member of the band, the Radar Bros. refashioned themselves as a quartet for 2008's Auditorium. Apart from the expanded lineup, however, nothing much else has changed, since the Bros. still sound too languid to venture outside their slowcore comfort zone. They excel at crafting dreamy ballads that owe as much to sedatives as Pink Floyd's "Breathe," complete with sleepy-eyed synth swells and jarring, left-field lyrics ("I keep drinking you [ read more ]
