Stephen Malkmus
After Pavement announced they were going on hiatus at the end of 1999, the status of one of America's finest indie rock bands was a mystery for the first half of 2000. It became clearer that summer, however, when it was revealed that both singer/songwriter/guitarists Stephen Malkmus and Scott Kannberg were preparing solo albums. Malkmus was particularly busy during that time, performing new songs with Kim's Bedroom -- a one-off group that also included Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon and Jim O'Rourke -- that spring in Holland and recording them at studios near...[more]

I battled the temptation to do the usual spiel, singing of praises to indie superstar, Pavement founder and general singer-songwriter genius but I just did it anyway! Here is a single taken from his third solo album on Matador Face the Truth 'Post-Paint Boy'. Enjoy!

"MY goal: to mix the precision of Saab, Stefan Edberg and Bergman with the laid back (yet heavy) beats of deepest Trenchtown. Well, at least on one song (?Vague Space?). The other tunes try to be new and entertaining versions of the type of songs I've always admired." - Stephen Malkmus

Face the Truth unveils a new Stephen Malkmus. His exuberance has given way to bliss, and his performances are more disarming and electrifying than ever. The volatile SM who sang 'Water and a Seat' as if he were Muhammad Ali extolling his punch and shuffle is missing. Face the Truth we hear a beseeching, almost quizzical SM who has - to generalize - returned to his first influences. And he has downplayed his guitar virtuosity behind his singing and arranging.

While his successful 2001 solo debut, 'Stephen Malkmus', showcased his development as a melodic singer-song-writer, 'Pig Lib' embraces the classic rock ensemble. If the form is familiar, however, the contents are not. A delectable array of antecedents inform the music herein, from Irish prog-folk greats Mellow Candle to the jazz-inflected musings of Kevin Ayers and Lol Coxhill to some of the more outré moments on Pavement's weirdest album, 'Wowee Zowee.'
