Do Make Say Think
Toronto band Do Make Say Think began as the psychedelic-influenced instrumental improvisations of bassist/trumpeter Charles Spearin, guitarist Justin Small, and drummer James Payment. The band grew to include keyboardist Jason MacKenzie and multi-instrumentalist Ohad Benchetrit, with the final addition of drummer Dave Mitchell in 1998. Do Make Say Think released their self-titled debut on Constellation Records in late 1998, followed by the early 2000 release Goodbye Enemy Airship the Landlord Is Dead. After promotions for that album subsided, they...[more]

The third full-length by Do Make Say Think marks another quantum leap towards sonic and compositional mastery by this Toronto-based instrumental rock band. Their space- and drone-rock foundations continue to serve as the launching pad for experimentation with jazz-inflected motifs, but with "& Yet & Yet," the group's pop sensibility is also on fine display. Melodic themes laid out by guitars and horns wind along a burbling brook of fat analog synths and phased percussion, tiny subtle details are worked in [ read more ]

Do Make Say Think have fashioned a fourth full-length album of tremendous beauty and depth, more loosely woven than previous records and played with careful, often wistful restraint. The songs on "Winter Hymn Country Hymn Secret Hymn" are eerie and iridescent, composed and captured with mesmerizing attention to detail, guided by the band's most intricate and intimate guitar passages to date. Many of the songs feature a newfound non-linearity in compositional structure that once again raises the DMST bar for [ read more ]

Since Constellation issued their self-released debut record in 1998, Do Make Say Think have made one critically acclaimed album after Another. They are one of the most consistently inventive instrumental rock bands of the past decade, and one of the most self-realised: DMST members themselves have recorded, mixed and mastered all the band's work, developing a highly original and finely detailed approach to audio production. You, You're A History In Rust is the fifth record by Do Make Say Think and [ read more ]

While many of their Constellation labelmates concerned themselves more with ambience, Do Make Say Think was a bit more traditional, but only a bit. In fact, the band owes as much to dub and early Kraftwerk as it does to psychedelic space rock. On each of the album's (mostly) lengthy tracks, the band takes its time getting from A to B. Yawnsville, if you're looking for a rock album, but a great way to mellow out if you're in no particular hurry. As with other Constellation releases, the packaging [ read more ]

What's refreshing about Goodbye Enemy Airship the Landlord Is Dead is its earnestness and straightforward approach. The band implements some interesting mixing techniques, including panning electronic loops and rich reverb, which invite the "post-rock" critiques, but also enhance their sound. The guitars are deft, and most of the album relies on minor droning themes. "When Day Chokes Night," the first track, opens with a lone guitar riff that builds to a cathartic demise, but this formula -- simple me [ read more ]
