Four Tet
Spawned from the urge to do something apart from his post-rock band Fridge, Kieran Hebden's Four Tet project balances organic and programmed sounds. Hebden formed Fridge with Sam Jeffers and Adam Ilhan while still in high school. When Fridge went on temporary hiatus for Jeffers and Ilhan to attend college, Hebden spent time playing with ideas gained from hip-hop and electronica that he hadn't had time for while concentrating on the band. Eager to experiment, Hebden bought a computer and began collecting drum and sound samples. Though h...[more]

A 32-minute, four-track excursion into the kind of wide-open spaces you might find if you set out to make techno with an Afro-beat / krautrock sensibility. These are tracks that make you think of Berlin - Dakar - Detroit - but they could only have been made in London. All four are headphone epics, but are mixed in such a way you have to hear them at Plastic People or The End. 'Ringer' carries that minimal pulse over into Four Tet, and while Kieran Hebden's trademark recuttings of jazz breaks may be less in [ read more ]

Trying to predict a future direction for Four Tet after Kieran Hebden's time recording with everyone from Steve Reid to his old trio Fridge shouldn't even have been attempted, but the Ringer EP is still a big surprise. Sounding like it was recorded ten or sometimes 20 years earlier than it actually was, the four-tracker reconciles Hebden's mesmerizing early Four Tet material with the sound of IDM circa the early '90s and, also, the movie soundtrack style of the '80s popularized by {$Tan [ read more ]

Pockets' extends the DJ-Kicks series tradition of stand-out exclusive tracks from the producer creating the mix, giving a taste of Four Tet's highly anticipated DJ-Kicks. This song is Four Tet as you haven't quite heard him before. It's danceable and funky-as-hell, while the b-side features a dub version that is equally dancefloor ready. This DJ-Kicks mix may be Four Tet's only original release this year, but if songs like 'Pockets' are any indication, his new material is worth the wait.

Kieran Hebden is one of those artists whose receptive audience is without classification. And that extends into the world of musical colleagues. Four Tet has commandeered fans and collaborators as wide reaching as experimental rock bands (Radiohead), massive pop acts (Coldplay), underground hip-hop producers (the late J Dilla), post-punk influenced upstarts (Bloc Party), electronic mavericks (Aphex Twin), folk chanteuses (Beth Orton and Juana Molina), and jazz legends (with Kieran's ongoing collaboration wi [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. The second single to be taken from Four Tet's hugely acclaimed and latest album Everything Ecstatic, is "A Joy". A churning bass-heavy tune, like a washing machine set to "queasy," "A Joy" is, in its own right, and in the context of the album, a striking opener. Impossible drums skitter across an alien jazz terrain and disappear behind rocks, only to come back bigger and more terrifying. For this vinyl single release however, the bar has been significantly raised. Hebden h [ read more ]
