April March
April March (born Elinore Blake on April 20, 1965) is an American vocalist whose elegant indie pop material is often performed in French. Although the first album she ever purchased was England's Newest Hit Makers by the Rolling Stones, April March's own songs hark back to the pre-rock days of European pop and French yT-yT music. Following stints with several bands, she launched a solo career under the April March guise and recorded material throughout the '90s and early 2000s, usually gaining release abroad or via small indie labels in America.

April March's second full-length solo album, "Triggers," is an improvement over her first, which was a bit unfocused at times. This is a laser sharp recording guided by the firm and wildly talented hand of French producer Bertrand Burgalat. Together, he and March have created a wonderful, modern interpretation of the French pop sounds of the '60s. In fact, other than in the case of some of Serge Gainsbourg productions and the odd Frantoise Hardy single, they have topped the sounds that [ read more ]

Recommended! More French goodness from American-born April March, aka Elinor Blake. Don't believe us? The New Yorker named "Chrominance Decoder" one of the top ten albums of 1999. "There's something sexy about a girl that sings in French (both linguistically and stylistically), but besides Elinor Blake's charming pixie voice, the star of this show is producer/arranger/composer Bertrand Burgalat, who has put together a feather-soft but substantial bed of trippy music that heightens the image of April March a [ read more ]

This collaboration between April March and the Southern California band Los Cincos is a pleasant listen, often sounding like a mix between the Cardigans and the Ventures. March's nice vocals glide over the most mature music Los Cincos have ever recorded. Adding depth to the record is the violin playing of ex-That Dog member Petra Haden, whose playing is perfectly suited for this material, especially on the album's centrepiece, "Last Train to Christmas." The highlights include a ne [ read more ]

A departure from April March's previous solo albums, April March Sings Along With the Makers is much more along the lines of the shambolic punk rock of her records as lead singer of the Shitbirds. The album is a true collaboration with Spokane, WA's the Makers, who ignore the grunge explosion entirely, preferring to focus on the snotty garage rocking style of earlier Pacific Northwest heavies like the Kingsmen, the Wailers, and the Sonics. The songs are as stagey as March's pre [ read more ]
