A Silver Mt. Zion
A Silver Mt. Zion is a mostly instrumental Montreal chamber rock group of musicians from Godspeed You Black Emperor!, including GYBE! guitarist Efrim (who focuses more on piano in this band), violinist Sophie, bassist Thierry, and guests. Efrim began writing the music in early 1999 and A Silver Mt. Zion played their first show in early March of that year. The group -- along with occasional guests Aidan (drummer, also of Godspeed and Exhaust), Gordon Krieger (clarinetist in Exhaust), and guitarist Sam Shalabi -- began recording {$A Silv...[more]

The dreamy debut album from the trio of GODSPEED YOU BLACK EMPEROR's EFRIM, THIERRY and SOPHIE. An eight-part collage of two plaintive, reverb-drenched ensemble pieces composed on piano, and then arranged with contrabass and violin, and interspersed with tapes, drones, loops and an occasional vocal. This third full-length recording by Mt. Zion finds the band continuing to work as a six-piece, with various guests on drums & a couple dozen folks on choral duty. The core personnel remains Efrim (guitar, piano, tapes, effects, vocals), Thierry (bass), Sophie (violin), Beckie (cello), Ian (guitar), & Jessica (violin). A Silver Mt. Zion is a group led by founding Godspeed You Black Emperor! guitarist Efrim, together with other Godspeed members Sophie and Thierry. For the band's second record, the line-up has been expanded to six players, including Becky, Ian, and Jessica, and the band renamed The Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra and Tra-la-la Band. "Born Into Trouble...," while anchored in an underlying sadness and mourning about this failed world, reveals a decidedly angrier, more urgent face as this phenomenal ensembl [ read more ]

A Silver Mt. Zion -- on this release known as Thee Silver Mt. The first song's about war and drug addiction, fourth song's about Canada, and the rest of it is all love songs trulytrulytruly. As usual there's more questions than answers here, more complaints than solutions, and at times the group's singing is a little out o [ read more ]

Perhaps the finest band on a very, very fine Canadian label, Constellation Records, Silver Mount Zion returns with 13 Blues for Thirteen Moons, their first record since the near-masterpiece Horses in the Sky. Released in 2005, that record established Silver Mount Zion as a musical force all its own, existing beyond any sort of stylistic boundaries. On their follow-up, the band luckily, remarkably, continue to grow, evolve, and get even better. Things start in a deceptively familiar fashion on [ read more ]
