Rivulets
Minimalist singer/songwriter Nathan Amundson began recording as Rivulets in 1999, when his self-titled debut was issued by Chair Kickers' Union, the Duluth, MN, label run by the veteran slowcore outfit Low. Often driven only by voice or quiet guitar, Rivulets was frighteningly gentle, yet genuinely powerful. The brooding love songs of Mark Kozelek's Red House Painters were an apt comparison, as were the acute, windswept soundscapes of Iceland's Sigur R=s. Rivulets -- Nathan Amundson's solo musical project -- is basically dusty bedroom folk music, although Amundson is an artist of the best slowcore tradition and crafts his songs with a cool and careful ambience. Of course, this might have something to do with him coming from Alaska, a land not especially renowned for its warmth, or it might have to do with his friendship with Low's Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker. Sure enough, Rivulets' music echoes a bit of Low's sound; like them, Amundson is good at using a c [ read more ]

Close your eyes, and listen. You've entered a cathedral -- cool tile floors, high ceilings, white marble fixtures, wooden balconies, yellow stained glass sometimes you can hear a car or motorcycle buzz by outside. Inside, every sound -- footsteps, coughing, song -- is echoed beautifully, the natural acoustics of the space allowing them to swirl around a bit before disappearing. Such is the setting for the recording of "Debridement," the second album from Rivulets. Rivulets, aka minimalist singer-songwriter [ read more ]

Centered on the tense, moving, often disturbing songs of Nathan Amundson, Rivulets consists of Amundson on acoustic guitar and vocals while Jay Kroehler adds ethereal bass and effects. On this self-titled debut, Nathan is joined by LD Beghtol (Flare, The Magnetic Fields), who provides ukulele and shruti box; Mimi Parker (Low) who lends her percussion and angelic voice to "Barreling..."; and Jay Kroehler (ex-Puritan) on bass, xylophone and effect manipulation. Four songs recorded live in studio for Icelandic National Radio in Reykjavik in March of 2001. These four versions were inspired by the vast, alien landscapes and warm-hearted people there. Performed solo for voice and guitar, these songs are stripped to a bare, spare minimalism that leaves the mind to fill in the spaces with memories and hope.
