Styrofoam
The electronic one-man project known as Styrofoam came to life in Antwerp, Belgium, but didn't find its feet until moving to Berlin early on, and immersing itself in the developing rock/electronic hybrid scene that was taking that city by storm in the early years of the 21st century. The sole artist behind the moniker, Arne Van Petegem, quickly built a solid following in his new home, and caught the attention of Morr Music. Styrofoam released its first album for the label, The Point Misser, in 2000, followed by a string of successful releases, including 2001's {^A ...[more]

It's been quite a while since we last heard of styrofoam on Morr Music. But Arne van Petegem has not been lazy in the meantime. Unlike styrofoam's scarce ventures into the vocal domain in the past, he now seems to be completely at ease with his vocal qualities. He does not bury them deep in the mix or hide them behind complex layers of sound processing anymore. On the contrary, he puts them in front, loud and clear for anyone to hear. One can truly argue that styrofoam's new album has mastered the art of jux [ read more ]

Here's two exclusive tracks released in Morr Music's limited singles series. 'To simply lie here and breathe' is a granulated collision of stretched out vocal lines and minimal beats battling it out with an underwater piano. Second track ?oh, but you are, totally' is a late night afterthought to the murder album: a tale of self destruction backed by a banging hiphop beat and featuring sweet vocals under constant digital attack.

After having misspent his youth fronting several indie guitar bands, Arne Van Petegem (Antwerp, Belgium) finally made the right decision and swapped his guitar for a sampler and sequencer. Styrofoam quickly started a relationship with Morr Music and started recording his debut album in the isolated confinements of his home studio. In the meantime, Styrofoam also started doing his first live outings, supporting Mira Calix amongst others. 'The Point Miser' (LP/CD, MM-010), the Styrofoam debut album on Morr Mu [ read more ]

From the introductory sweep of sweet synths that brightens "After Sunset," A Thousand Words' opening track, it's clear Styrofoam has made a dramatic break with the past. Brushing aside the dark atmospheric clouds and downtempo rhythms that previously infested his sound, Arne Van Petegem has created an album that is surprisingly bright and upbeat. The warm "Sunset" pushes toward pop, while the bubbly "Bright Red Helmet" bounces straight into it with obvious delight. Bright melodies predominate, invari [ read more ]
