Client
"We wish to be judged on our artistic merit, as opposed to our personalities," so says Client B, 50 percent of the anonymous duo that makes up Client. Apart from the semiobvious facts that Client appears to be made up of two young women (apparently from the north of England given their accents) and that they are the first signings to Andy Fletcher's (of Depeche Mode fame) Toast Hawaii label, not much else in the way of biography was on offer by the time of their 2003 eponymous debut. What is easily discernible is that Client retains a strong penchant for the ...[more]

As the first signings to Andy Fletcher's Toast Hawaii label, Client's arrival on the music scene couldn't have been more timely. Their eponymous debut album, released in August 2003, has been hailed by many as the answer to their prayers, a sleazy pop gem that was just at home on your bedroom stereo as it was in a club. Poppy without being sanitized, danceable without being identikit, Client take the contemporary trend for all things electro to the next level by combining pulsing, machine-funk, analogue sou [ read more ]

"...when the advances in computer technology in the early 21st century made a revival of interest in electronic music inevitable. This coincided with the arrival of the duo Client (known only as Client:A and Client:B.) who created an electronic sound simultaneously dirty and pristine, and attracted music fans bored with production-line pop, superficial dance and tired rock. Spawning many imitators, their influence is keenly felt even now?

Client are a female electro duo producing stark and compulsive electro-pop anthems that combine the incisive and acerbic lyrical wit of The Smiths and the "Northern song writer tradition" with a pulsing, immediate electronic sound reminiscent of Kraftwerk and Joy Division. For their third effort, Client become a three-piece with Client A and Client B joined by new member Client E. Client would probably like you to believe she was assimilated Borg-style into the group, and considering how her contributions are indistinguishable when compared to their earlier albums, it's believable. The wee bit of growth the band displays is right in line with the slow pace they displayed between record one and record two, which might as well have been their titles considering t [ read more ]

Opening with the hackneyed "life is cruel and then you die" offers little hope that Client's City is going to hold much appeal to all those who don't get the whole business suit/latex glove stance of the group -- or get it but think it's tired. Good news is Client tries harder by pulling back on City, and anyone with an electro-'80s fetish is going to find plenty to drool over. The icy and tawdry tunes are tempered with Yaz-esque sereneness, "One Day at a Time" and {&"The Chill of Octob [ read more ]
