"As nothing stands on its own too long these days before getting knocked down by the inevitable avalanche of hype it's best to be low key about this one. VINYL FORMAT. An album of dense pop that justifies the band's place among top songsmithing contemporaries like Cass McCombs and James Mercer, as well as Bowie. But the band is able to bypass the songwriter label by delivering a much more collective sound. African high-life guitars are countered with new wave wash; the sound of a band daring to keep its palette open to most any influence, from U2 to The Feelies. Foreign Born deliver the soundtrack for the backyard BBQ of the ages.

Their sound is a dark, acoustic, psychedelic mixture of influences that range from Roy Orbison and John Lennon to The Fall, Primal Scream, The Jesus & Mary Chain, and Brian Eno. Armed with energetic songs that sound larger than life, a complex and almost hypnotic draw on percussion, and an Eno-esque shoe-gazed lead guitar, all melded together by the ghostly driving force of the bass, it's clear that Foreign Born is a band not to be ignored.[ read more ]
