Who's the Hottie continues in Mount Shasta's role as a solid (if rather monochromatic) band. Not much can be said about the sound itself -- your run-of-the-mill all-out rock, with all of the angular riffing and hollering one would expect -- but the band does another competent job with its execution, polishing things up a bit and turning out a record that should prove consistently appealing to fans of the genre. ~ Nitsuh Abebe, All Music Guide

Coming at the listener like a musical cyclone, Shakuhachi Surprise manages to attack with repeated guitar riffs that wear you down mentally. Some of the music creates a video game soundtrack, where the pace and the screams conjure up thoughts of monsters riding supercharged mopeds ("Shacho"). Other songs range from the singers sounding like they're convulsing uncontrollably after a bad plate of sushi to metallic dances where ballet shoes equipped with cleats have burrowed into your head.
