Eaglesmith strips the sound down for this one, building a lot out of relentless rhythm tracks that beat at the frontal lobes until things give way. Eaglesmith's songs have an intimate relationship with force and fury, all carried through in the arrangement and delivery, providing a sense of menace to each tune. After a few brilliant early records, Eaglesmith decided to more or less coast on the formula he had perfected with Lipstick, Lies, and Gasoline. 50 Odd Dollars showed, however, that the trailer-trash shtick had already worn thin, which makes the improved Falling Stars and Broken Hearts all the more welcome. Anyone who's come to know Fred Eaglesmith as one of the most brilliant folk-rock songwriters of the '90s can't help but be disappointed by 50 Odd Dollars' middle-of-the-road country-rock crunch. Then again, it depends on what you like to hear. Fans of his trailer-trash tales of fast trains and drunken nights will probably enjoy this album's loud guitars and pounding beat, whereas folks who live for his wistful early work will be disappointed in its lack of clemency.
