Skelliconnection (CD)
Using an assortment of instruments, both conventional and handmade, Chad's created an even more diverse assemblage of music than for his last album and debut, Infiniheart. He's an amazingly talented illustrator and animator. You may have seen his videos for his own "Clinically Dead" and Love As Laughter's "Dirty Lives". Both were featured on MTV2's "Subterranean" video show, which Chad also hosted. He's played with Built To Spill, Wolf Parade, and The Pixies, to name a few. This record is a restless, living thing, roaming between simple yet beautiful ballads, aggressively dissonant post-punk and jazz-inflected synth-pop explorations, at times whimsical, and at others heartrending.

| better than his first...and his first was really good. check out "mini tvs" a neil young sound a like. also listen to "flower gardens"...it's got a really cool 80's-ish feel. he should be proud. most people's follow ups to albums as good as infiniheart aren't any good. but chad did a great job. check him out live...it's great. | |

| Chad's drummer told me @ the show in Atlanta last month that Chad considers himself a visual artist before a musician, and he evidently has talent in that realm, with 2 animated videos included on this disc, not to mention the album art. But the guy's played with the Pixies, Stars, Wolf Parade and Built to Spill, so his rock resume ain't too shabby, either. A PROLIFIC songwriter, Chad compiled Skelliconnection from hundreds of songs he's written in the past few years. The result is something very eclectic, but not spastic or derailing to a listener. A thread of soul runs throughout the 15 tracks.
His quirky vocal stylings resemble fellow Cannucks Neil Young and John K. Samson of the Weakerthans most notably. But the force of his lyricism + the tones through which he resonates also recall the cinematic propulsions of Sufjan Stevens, The Arcade Fire and the Flaming Lips (track 3 is sooo Wayne Cohen). Masterful guitar picking, plucking and bowing salutes the Kings of Convenience, or Andrew Bird. Experimentalism like Joan of Arc. Heart-wringing sincerity like Onelinedrawing, or even Elliott Smith. This album has been in my personal heavy rotation stack since I got it, and I enjoyed Chad's live performance more so than headliner Band of Horses'. | |
