VINYL FORMAT. Pressed on high-quality 180 gram vinyl and housed in a gatefold sleeve. Includes two bonus tracks: "Welcome to the Island" and "Pray for the Other Person's Happiness."

What Will We Be has a sunny, breezy feel with performances that evoke warm, lazy afternoons spent with good friends. The album is dominated by powerfully melodic, mid-tempo numbers played with relaxed expertise. But there's also ambitious stylistic range displayed with the inclusion of evanescent ballads like "Meet Me At the Lookout Point," the epic riff-rocker "Rats" sprightly R&B flavored groovers on "Baby," and the sultry Latin-flavored stunner "Brindo," the Roxy-inspired "16th and Valencia Roxy Music" among other pleasant surprises.

What Will We Be was recorded in a sleepy Northern California town throughout the Spring of 2009, and was co-produced by Paul Butler (from UK outfit Band Of Bees). This is the second album Devendra's recorded with the same crew of players: Noah Georgeson (producer of Banhart's last two albums, Little Joy, Bert Jansch and Joanna Newsome) on guitar and backing vocals, Greg Rogove (Priestbird) on drums and backing vocals; Luckey Remington (The Pleased) on bass and vocals and Rodrigo Amarante (Los Hermanos, Little Joy) on guitar and backing vocals. All the musicians involved played a part in arranging the songs recorded. Where Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon sounded like Devendra and friends brainstorming, sharing off-beat ideas and licks, What Will We Be sees them first and foremost addressing the particular needs of each individual composition. It's accomplished, focused and straightforwardly handsome.

User Reviews

   Darren - Milltown, NJ,
I won't get into a content review here other than to say this is the most cohesive and my favorite Banhart album since Nino Rojo/Rejoicing in the Hands. Paul Butler's production is top notch as is the mix and mastering. I've had a digital copy of this since it's release and had been looking forward to the Vinyl. I am very pleased. As of late Warner's has been putting out top shelf vinyl pressings. The last Raconteurs and two most recent Wilco albums are proof. What Will Be on vinyl jumps out from the speakers. The bass is deep, clean and tight. Mids and highs are smooth and even. The stereo mix is perfect and the sound stage is wide with no holes. Much of this is probably do to expert production, but the vinyl presentation makes it shine. I highly recommend picking up the LP. The two vinyl only bonus tracks make it even more worthwhile.
