The Meadowlands (CD)
MAGNET named this album one of the 60 best records of the last 10 years. A band with a back story that reads like a Chuck Palahniuk novel (male absurdity, futile ambition, adolescent maturity, acid wit, and a Pixies cover). This album makes me want to send the rich dudes in The Strokes/Rooney/Weezer/Phantom Planet to New Jersey for seven years and make them eat dirt and work McJobs until they come up with something half as wounded and inventive as "The Meadowlands." A masterwork.![]()

| This is the "real deal" here, kids.
I'm not one to write reviews much (or at all), but I have listened to this album weeks upon weeks on end and it has barely left my CD player. It starts with "The House That Guilt Built" and refuses to let you go from start to end. From the upbeat sound of "Everyone Chooses Sides" to the beautiful "Boys, You Won't" to the ironically-titled "Happy", this is something that you cannot let pass by.
The Wrens make writing and playing a perfect pop song seem so effortless. If this album does not leave an impression on you, check your pulse.
PS. This review is based on the limited edition version, which contains 4 bonus tracks tacked onto the end. They are nice songs, I think at least two of them are short instrumental tracks which seem slightly undeveloped. Oh well, worth a listen. And the case is a silk-screened digipak-kinda thing too. It's really neat. Am I making you envious here (if you don't have a copy of this yourself, and it's sold out and all)? Sorry. | |
