Brighter Now (CD)
London duo Martine Roberts and Clive Painter, have, over the years, plotted a steady course of releases since they put out their debut album on Big Cat in 1996. "Brighter Now" is Broken Dog's fourth album. Within these 10 fiercely individualistic tracks are slabs of sweeping brass, lush orchestration, intimate dreamy vocals, and plangent rock guitars all interwoven as naturally as breathing. At the same time they manage to retain that languorous, haunting quality that made them so appealing from the start. They have also been happy helping to shape the music of others. Bands who've recorded at Animal over the last couple of years include (The Real) Tuesday Weld, Monograph, Pacific Radio, and Miss Mend -- not to mention that they co-wrote, recorded, and co-produced Tram's debut album "Heavy Black Frame." Hazy, forlorn, dreamscape-pop altitudes for fans of Mazzy Star, the latest Club 8, and Trembling Blue Stars.
