Insound Staff Pick - 2008! So where does a band go after releasing the most defiantly experimental record of its career? If you're the Flaming Lips, you keep rushing headlong into the unknown -- The Soft Bulletin, their follow-up to the four-disc gambit Zaireeka, is in many ways their most daring work yet, a plaintively emotional, lushly symphonic pop masterpiece eons removed from the mind-warping noise of their past efforts. Though more conventional in concept and scope than Zaireeka, The Soft Bulletin clearly reflects its predecessor's expansive sonic palette. There's no telling where the Lips will go from here, but it's almost beside the point -- not just the best album of 1999, The Soft Bulletin might be the best record of the entire decade.

The best album of 1999, one of the top ten albums of the decade, and one that has a good chance at becoming one of the most classic albums in rock history. "The Soft Bulletin" stands as a great American document of what the pulse of this country was like at the end of the century: a niave, young nation "leading" the world into a new millenium. We may not know what the hell we're doing, but we can sure fake it: watch as we bedazzle others with our profound knowledge of technology. "The Soft Bulletin" brings to light a very important question: Are we controlling technology or is the technology controlling us? I'm reaching. The album rocks. Buy it already!

this album marks the end of the century and is a perfect soundtrack for such. I am utterly and completely taken over by the Soft Bulletin. profoundness, grandeur, fragility, playfulness, and innocent expression all wrapped up in one . perfection!

The most beautiful record ever made. It pays tribute to "Pet Sounds" and "Whats going on" but still manages to break new ground. They should get the Nobel Peace Prize for Waiting for Superman.

I don't consider anyone a real person unless they own this album. Anyone that has heard it has loved it. Anyone that hasn't doesn't matter anyway. The Soft Bulletin is an album that needed to be made for the good of mankind.

best damn album of 1999. end of story.

Forget Nirvana, forget Beck, forget Smashing Pumpkins. You want to know who released the album of the decade? The Flaming Lips, that's who. They've perfected the pop song, but the Lips do something that no one else writing pop songs does these days: they give it a soul. I hope there isn't a single, since this is definitely one of those albums you have to hear all at once. The album (at least in part) tells the story of Wayne Coyne's father's battle and defweat with cancer, which gives it a somber, melancholic feel through the beauty of strings, acoutics, and the greatest beauty, experimentalism. But that's what the Lips are about, and they've done it. This is the proverbial "Stuck on a Desert Island" disc of all time. I would highly recommend fans of anything to rush out and buy this right now.

Fantastic. The perfect album to release after "Zaireeka". "The Soft Bulletin" takes "Zaireeka" and turns it into a pop album. And a damn good one at that. Similar in production (minus the insane 4 discs), but with much better song writing. I *highly* advise getting this album, NOW.
