Friend and Foe (CD)
Friend and Foe shines Northwest indie songcraft through a Chicago post-rock lens, illuminating the quiet recesses with an unpredictable, experimental light. Danny Seim, Justin Harris, and Brent Knopf perform, sing, arrange, create, and destroy Menomena songs. They've released two previous albums on Portland indie label Film Guerrero, I Am the Fun Blame Monster and Under An Hour, which consists of three lengthy instrumental compositions and is the soundtrack to a modern dance performance choreographed by a friend. Friend and Foe is immediately captivating, packed with melodies that lodge themselves in you mind for hours. It's also a deep record, with many layers that show themselves over time.![]()

| One of my favorite albums of '07. I'm a huge fan of 'I Am The Fun Blame Monster and did not know how it could be topped, and yet, it has been. Just give a listen. SO GREAT! | |

| This album isn't really like anything I've heard before. The instrumentation varies from classic pop oriented piano compositions to free jazzy sax experiments. Whenever you think you know where the song is heading, Menomena turns it upside down takes it somewhere completely different. Is it good?, you may ask. Well, sort of. The amount of experimentations sometimes remove the melodic structures, and sometimes it seems that the good ideas are lost in the many directions the songs take. Should I buy it then?, you may ask. Of course you should. The weaker tracks (no worries, there are only a few) are lifted by some absolutely stunning ones like "Wet and Rusting" and "The Pelican". Furthermore the artwork makes the album worth every penny; a flip-able booklet in different colors and prints on the actual cd, matching the holes in the booklet, gives you almost endless possibilities to create your own cover. | |

| This album has been on heavy repeat for me. I was surprised to find how strong the songwriting was in addition to the novel sound of the band. Reminds me a little of the Flaming Lips - experimental sound with an earnestness and pop sensibility. | |

| This album is not that great. I was intrigued by the premise of the record, random pieces of instrumentation strung together randomly...I thought if this could be pulled off with an ear for melody, this album could be awesome. It?s not. Only one song, "Wet and Rusting", deserves the generally hyperbolic praise this album has been garnering. Just buy the single and be done with it. | |

| Menomena's new CD Friend and Foe is by far the best album of the year to date. It is not only eclectic, but also very, very, entertaining. Personal favorite tracks of mine are "Air Aid" and "My My". I must say that Barsuk has really got a great band here, and this album also features the best and most fun artwork of all time. You are able to 'create your own cover' but not in the beck sense where you need to actually spend time on it. The Menomena cover has 4 different sides and the CD can be positioned in so many ways for hours and hours of fun. BUY THIS RECORD!!! | |

| Menomena have done it again. They have made a smart and complex pop record with songs that are thoroughly enjoyable. Very few bands are able to make one album with so many interesting musical elements that invoke so many different feelings, and still blend it all together seamlessly. Menomena have made several. This is an album that is well worth owning not just for the music, but also for the fantastic album art. The Tracks Air Aid, Evil Bee, and West are particular stand outs for me. | |
