Waumiss is the latest music project of husband and wife team Clarque and Caroline Blomquist of Carrboro, North Carolina. The Waumiss album was recorded on a Tascam 488 cassette Portastudio and a primitive Roland MS-1 Sampler, using a process that involved extracting, manipulating, and layering samples culled from previous home recording projects, then using the results as starting points for new songs. There is something immediately refreshing in their simple approach to music that is unique and yet has an underlying complexity - at once modern and primitive in style and execution. The Blomquists were teenage punk rockers once upon a time, growing up in Florida in the 1980s, and have held onto that energy, but as they approach their 40s the duo brings to bear influences that are wide ranging - amalgamating dub, psych, break beat, drone, musique concrete, hip-hop, jangle-pop, sound collage, and more.
